JRU also on a rampage, equals 2001 feat

3 08 2007

NOBODY remembers the last time the JRU Heavy Bombers registered a four-game winning streak.

Jose Rizal University came up huge in the last moments of the ball game. The Heavy Bombers hacked-out a resounding 80-65 win over the lowly College of Saint Benilde Blazers last August 3 in the 83rd NCAA men’s basketball at The Arena in San Juan City .

It was the first time that JRU tallied a four-game winning streak since it happened in 2001.

“Yup that’s what we remember, but this is my first time since I handled the school’s athletic office in 2005,” said Paul Supan, the JRU athletic director.

After a close first half, the JRU Heavy Bombers ignited a decisive run in the second half particularly in its final minutes, 29-21, to clinch their four consecutive victory and maintain 3rd place in the standings with a 5-3 record.

“I feel so sad for this squad (CSB),” said JRU mentor Ariel Vanguardia. “I’m emotional because I came from this school.”

“After tying that record, I challenged my players to make another record,” said Vanguardia, whose team will face University of Perpetual Help next week. “We are just going to play our best.”

Marvin Hayes, who pumped in 19 points and amassed 16 rebounds, gave the Heavy Bombers their biggest advantage, 76-61, in the fourth period with a minute left.

JRU, after taking a 13-12 lead in the opener and 30-26 at halftime, totally controlled the game all-throughout as Hayes and the rest of the Heavy bombers took advantage of the Blazers’ low morale.

The Heavy Bombers outscored the Blazers in the third quarter, 21-18, for a 51-44 lead.

James Sena delivered 15 points plus 10 rebounds, while John Wilson added 13 points and 11 rebounds. John Agas made 11 points.

JRU’s rebounding (51-33) and total field goals (25-out-of-55) were definitely the keys for Coach Vanguardia. Martin Urra led the Blazers with 13 points and 9 rebounds.

JRU 80: Hayes 19, Sena 15, Wilson 13, Agas 11, Se 8, Gagoco 8, Nocom 5, Cunanan 3, Bulangis 0, Pradas 0.
