Red Lions roll over Golden Stags

FOR the delight of the fans, Samuel Ekwe, Pong Escobal, Rogemar Menor and the rest of the Red Lions continuously ran and controlled the game with authority.

The Stags could only stand and watch.

San Beda was virtually unstoppable at both ends to rout San Sebastian, 96-76, last August 3 and clinch at least a playoff berth in the semifinal round of 83rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City .

The Red Lions, behind their high-octane game and imposing front line, cruised to its seventh win after eight games and tied Letran on top with the same 7-1 record.

“We are aiming to get the top spot in the semifinals and I’m hoping my players will play this kind of this aggression,” said SBC Coach Frankie Lim. “It’s good my players are now starting to mature too.”

The reigning champion Red Lions never trailed as they took an insurmountable 26-13 bubble at the end of the first quarter, where Yousef Aljamal poured in 12 of his 23 points there along with 12 rebounds and six assists.

San Beda sustained its crippling assault by outscoring San Sebastian in the second quarter, 27-15, for a 53-28 halftime advantage.

Nigerian 6-foot-8 Samuel Ekwe, the last year’s rookie MVP, tallied 17 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and swatted away four Golden Stags attempts. While Pong Escobal produced 17 points – including two three-pointers.

Ekwe’s dunk with 7:15 minutes to go in the third quarter gave San Beda its biggest lead, 64-33, and San Sebastian stayed helpless all-throughout.

The Stags could only narrow the gap down to 20-points, 78-58, after Francis Bulawan’s trey with 8:28 minutes left to go in the fourth quarter.

Eduardo Tecson and Chito Tirona each fired a triple for an 87-60 count with only four minutes left in regulation.

It looked like San Beda was the virtual winner with three minutes remaining, while both teams were going thru the motion of the ball game the rest of the way.

Gilbert Bulawan was the only Golden Stags player in double figures with 17 points.

With its fourth loss in seven games, San Sebastian is now only one game ahead of University of Perpetual Help Dalta (2-5) for the race for the last semifinals berth.

Jim Viray and Jason Ballesteros were hardly a factor for the Golden Stags as the two PBL veterans combined for only 10 points.
