JRU registers 5-game run

THE Heavy Bombers finally know how to get away from jaws of frustration. As for the Altas’ game closer, there were too many useless fouls, too many turnovers. Too many instances to turn things around, but the Altas failed to cash in.

Host Jose Rizal University squandered an 11-point lead in the final two-minute mark before beating University of Perpetual Help Dalta System, 65-62, to surge to a five-game winning streak last August 8 in the 83rd NCAA men’s basketball at The Arena in San Juan City.

The JRU Heavy Bombers wasted a 59-48 lead with 2:03 left after the Altas dropped a scorching 15-4 bomb capped by eight points from Dysam that narrowed the gap to 63-61 with 30 seconds left.

But Perpetual failed to sustain the run as JRU’s trapping defense turned to be a major pain in the last 12 seconds after Mark Kong’s go-ahead basket was deflected by Marvin Hayes as the buzzer sounded.

Mark Cagoco paced JRU with 17 points, while Jason Nocom added 12 and Hayes nine to give JRU a 6-3 slate to remain on third spot.

Perpetual dropped to 2-6.

Individual scores:

JRU 65: Cagoco 17, Nocom 12, Hayes 9, Lituania 8, Sena 6, Cunanan 3, Se 3, Agas 2, Kabigting 2, Wilson 2, Pradas 1, Bulangis 0, Ramos 0.
