AS expected, the Red Lions have added misery on the Blazers’ struggling campaign.

San Beda College, the reigning NCAA champs, virtually eliminated College of Saint Benilde out of the Final Four race by squeezing out a lopsided 81-61 win last Augusd 10 in the 83rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

With their big men making a wonderful job off the boards and scoring mostly from the shaded lane, the Red Lions scored big time in the second half to gain an 8-1 record and capture the first semifinal ticket.

This is San Beda’s third Final Four appearance after four years.

“I have nothing on my mind right now but prepare against JRU (Jose Rizal University), our next opponent,” said Frankie Lim, the SBC head coach. “Everybody played well today including my second stringers.”

Forward Yousef Aljamal, leading his team thrice in scoring, poured in 21 points including 13 points in third period. Aljamal also had 10 rebounds.

His basket with 1:12 left in the third quarter gave the Red Lions a 62-39 bubble.

“I just want to sustain my good showing each game,” said Aljamal. “I’m hoping we can retain our title before I leave this school.”

After leading by 19-18 in first quarter and 35-29 at half, San Beda unleashed a telling 27-13 attack in the third quarter to stretch their advantage to 62-42 at the start of the payoff period.

San Beda’s reserve and rookie Garvo Lanete scored a lay up in the last 5:33 for a 74-49 count. The Red Lions cruised the rest of the way.

The Red Lions had 58 rebounds against 35 of the Blazers.

Coach Frankie Lim even used seldom used players like Chico Tirona and Anjo Caram to back-up Riego Gamalinda, Raymund Maggay and Eduardo Tecson in the 2nd quarter stretch to give them their much needed exposure or provide some spark to an unproductive 1st quarter by the Red Lions starters.

“We should not end there by just making it to the Final Four,” said Lim. “We wanted to make it to the finals and win the championship by winning our remaining games in the eliminations.”

The Blazers suffered their eighth defeat in nine games and kept their Final Four hopes in peril.

Kris Robles shot 18 points while Gerald Layug added 11 markers for Benilde, which lost steam in the second half.

Individual scores:

San Beda (81) – Aljamal 21, Ekwe 13, Lanete 11, Maggay 6, Menor 6, Tecson 5, Escobal 4, Gamalinda 4, Taupa 3, Caram 2, Marcelo 2, Taganas 2, Padilla 2, Hermida 0, Tirona 0.
