La Salle Choked!!!

12 08 2007

It was a heartbreaker. It was a won game that slipped away.

After playing 37 minutes of impressive basketball, La Salle choked at the end and let UST come back from a 12 point deficit and loses the game in overtime.

La Salle showed a new look in its defense as it crowded UST with every possession causing turnovers and forced shots. It was vintage La Salle defense. On the offense, they were patient and moved the ball around and their efforts paid off as they hit the open man.

Rebounding was also dominated by the Archers as they did not allow UST’s Jervy Cruz to dominate the paint.

What proved to be an eye opener was the play of La Salle’s second unit of Co, Illad, Cua, Atkins, Villanueva and Ferdinand.

Midway through the 4th quarter, La Salle goes on a run an takes a 12 point lead. They were playing great. But never underestimate the heart of a champion. UST did not give up.

With a little more than 2 minutes left, they just clamped down on defense and went on an offensive tear. La Salle just choked and watched as UST completely dominated them from all sides. The archers who are known for their end game composure, just collapsed.

With the game tied, James Mangahas had an open look in the closing seconds but muffed the shot.

In overtime, it was all UST. Pido Jarencio’s boys showed their composure while La Salle looked confused. It was obvious that they were not running the plays that were being drawn up. In the end, UST finally beats La Salle at its own game.

What is even more worrisome was the injury suffered by La Salle top gun JV Casio, who got hit in the thigh late in the overtime. Casio is La Salle’s top point maker and losing him to injuries would be a big blow.

I have to say that UST is now in the same level they were last year. This is a good team that will only get better. Hats off to the defending champions.

My 2 cents worth:

WHERE IS TY TANG? The expected last year of Tang has proven to be a nightmare. His shot selections have been horrendous and his court direction leaves much to be desired. In yesterday’s game, his heir apparent Simon Atkins had a better game. Unless Tang puts himself together, La Salle will find it very hard to win games.

WHERE IS MAIERHOFER? The pre-season MVP is also playing sub par. He is getting into early foul trouble and to avoid this, he is giving up his explosive shot blocking abilities.

Watch out for Ferdinand. He is already showing hints of what is to come for this behemoth. Defensively, he is already a force to reckon with.

Dont mind me

But I lost hope at the 2 minute mark.

I was like “damn. 8 years.”

The YJ in front of us said (at the 1:15 mark)
“ginawa na nila ang part nila. gawin na natin ang part natin. mag cheer tayo.”

Lo and behold. We brought the game to overtime, and silenced the La Sallian side.

Puso. Palaban. Panalo. – Pido Jarencio

Casio was crazy. Croos over here, step back there, booom, there goes the three. He’s DLSU’s MVP, but never brags about it. I hope his injury wasn’t that bad.

La Salle did stop Jervy in the rebounding department. He only got 17 rebounds.

TY Tang wasn’t in his element. I thought he’d be the one to close the game in the 4th canto. But he was the one who gave up a costly turn over (an elbow to Cortez).

Tiger Power,

How do you know this? Do you have any proof? If you do, let us know and we will definitely look into it.

Oh, by the way, why isn’t inboundpass.com running an article on borboran?

How about this, lasalle had 18 FT attempts while UST went for a big 49. That’s a big discrepancy. I think that played a big factor for the game.

But it wouldn’t have gone to overtime if Mirza made his FTs during the regulation and Cortez didn’t get butterfingers on the lay up.

La Salle did stop Jervy on his points production, but 17 friggin rebound is insane for a college player.

Jayvee,

Casio was rushed to the hospital and is still under observation but it looks like he was hit by a knee on his thigh. I think he will play on Thursday,

The Dont Mind, Mirza’s FTs is not the point. The point is the MANY attempts of ust vis-a-vis lasalle’s. The discrepancy is so BIG.

I know, i know.

I just wanted to point out UST’s inability to sink FTs. It seems that they still need to feel the pressure to sink one FT in.

I’m with you on that one as they could’ve iced the game in regulation time with almost 30 point against lasalle if they made their FTs.

Hello Green Mind, i have no solid proof with this but ubelt.com and the nike summer league websites have that birthday in the profile of borboran…this should be worth looking at…

i know this is not solid evidence against the guy, i have no time to go to NSO and procure his Birth Cert.

the thing is we have finally beaten the archers after 8 long years!! move on.. we still have yet to pound the warriors and the eagles.. then a final four seat awaits for us.. well, I agree though.. tigers have to deal more on their free throws as they miss around 10 at an average! that sucks for a defending champion team!

oh my…

If Mark Borboran has the same case as Jojo Duncil, this should be given a proper notice!!

If I remember this right and correct me if I’m wrong, varsity players aging 25 yrs. old and above are not eligible to play in UAAP regardless of whether they have a year or so eligibilty of playing ( as for Duncil’s case)..

And this is Crazy! Should Mark Borboran be found guilty, then UE should be penalized.. and I was thinking there were games that even Mark became the best player.. well, for a fact he’s part of the team, playing and having that issue in hand.. UAAP should do about it! It would not only be unfair to UST’s Duncil but of course to other teams that are fairly playing the ballgame..

Having that said, UAAP’s credibilty will be in question again.. should UAAP protect the credibilty of the league or let UE win more having ineligible players ( not same issue again!!) ????

And all the UAAP commissioner (not the board) has to do is ask UE to submit Mark Borboran’s authentic birth certificate first thing in the morning. And he can take whatever UE submits at face value. No need to verify. I don’t think UE will resort to falsification of public documents because that is punishable by jail terms and even death for the school officials.

You are right do not underestimate the heart of the champion… Is there any way we can watch any games of NCAA or UAAP? Its better to watch while reporting it rather than reading it… This is only my opinion.=)

Am also wondering what happened to the clutch skills of TY Tang during the dying portion of the regulation period. Maybe he went MIA, just like what happened to Jervy Cruz when JV Casio drove strong to the basket and made the lay-up to send the game to OT in the last win of DLSU against UST.
