MAPUA sustained its winning ways by scoring a lopsided 83-64 victory over University of Perpetual Help Dalta System and strengthened its Final Four bid in the 83rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament last August 15 at The Arena in San Juan City.

With five players scoring in double figures, the Cardinals controlled the whole game to register a three-game winning streak for a 5-6 record and hold on at the No. 4 spot of the standings.

A win by the Cardinals against Saint Benilde –their last assignment in the elimination round – on August 22 will assure them of at least a playoff berth for the last seat in the Final Four.

Guard Sean Co, who hit 10 of his 17 points in first period, started Mapua’s first period onslaught by firing a triple that gave the Cardinals their first taste of the lead, 16-14, with 1:17 minutes to go.

Mapua unleashed a 20-13 attack in the second period, capped by the eight points of Hermes Sumalinog, to end the halftime at 40-31.

The Cardinals broke the game wide open at the start of the second half with an 11-2 bomb capped by a basket from Jonathan Banal at the the corner, 51-33, with 7:26 minutes left.

Kelvin Dela Peña, who scored 16 points along with eight rebounds and nine assists, provided the Cardinals an insurmountable 65-46 lead in third quarter with 1:25 minutes to go.

Banal was responsible for MIT’s biggest lead with a three-pointer, 77-53, midway in the fourth period.

Jerby Del Rosario had 14 points, while Jonathan Banal added 12 and Neil Pascual chipped in 10 points also for the Cardinals.

Mapua tallied 29-out-of-53 total field goals against Perpetual’s 25-out-of-62.

Defending champion San Beda College has earned a Final Four berth at 8-1 while Letran (7-2) is a win away from formalizing its entry into the next level of the tournament.

Together with host Jose Rizal University (6-3), Mapua and San Sebastian are slugging it out for the last two playoff spots.

“I’m happy with the way my players performed, they did pretty well and followed the game plan of trapping Perpetual Help’s guards and deny their outside shooters,” said Mapua coach Leo Isaac.

“But we cannot relax, we still have a game left and we hope to finish the elimination strong.”

The Altas, with the loss, dropped to 2-7.
