A Day of Destiny, Jubilation and Tears

13 09 2007

After 14 games, the De La Salle Green Archers ended the season very much below what the Lasallian community expected. I was very disappointed after the recent loss to Ateneo and felt that the team was completely lost.

My judgment of the team changed after their game against UE today. After being beaten decidedly in their first round encounter, the Green Archers almost pulled out a win that would have rocked the league. La Salle had 2 chances to win it in regulation but it was not meant to be. UE’s destiny was to have a 14-0 season.

Today I saw a La Salle team that overachieved. With a line-up made up of 7 rookies (Mangahas, Malabes, Ferdinand, Lee, Atkins, Batricevic and Ilad (more on him later) and 4 role players in Cua, Walsham, Barua and Kish Co, La Salle actually achieved more than what their players could have ever dreamt they would.

The one year layoff really took its toll. I can only imagine how far this team would have reached if the 7 rookies would played last year. I believe that Coach Franz Pumaren was able to bring out the most out of the whole team and for that he should be congratulated.

Now, on the Brian Ilad incident, I strongly hope that the league suspends him for the rest of the season. His sucker punch was totally uncalled for. What made it even worse was that after throwing the punch, he hid behind the bench like a dog with his tail between his legs. On television, JV Casio could be seen berating him. I also heard from reliable sources that both Coach Franz and team captain TY Tang came down hard on him. If the league only suspends him for one game, then La Salle should take it upon itself to file separate disciplinary actions against Brian Ilad.

With UE, just waiting for their finals opponent, the rest of the standings are still undecided. UST lost an outright slot when it lost to unpredictable FEU Tamaraws in today’s first game. There is something about this FEU team that makes them an extremely dangerous opponent to any team, even UE. The defending champions just couldn’t find a way to counter the great play of Barroca, Cawaling, Sanga and Baracael. For the Growling Tigers to repeat, they have to win 4 straight games just to get to the finals and then beat the Red Warriors twice.

Ateneo has to beat NU this weekend to secure 2nd place. But history shows that Ateneo has a tendency to lose their next game after they beat La Salle. Also, NU is playing with nothing to lose and would want nothing more than to end their dismal season with a bang and act as the spoiler. If NU wins then there will be 2 playoff games on Monday with Ateneo facing La Salle for 2nd place.

All in all it has been a great regular season of the UAAP. Now comes the Final Four and more great games will be played. My finals match-up prediction is UE vs, La Salle. Yes, I will still go for my Alma Mater to pull it off.

Yes,something has to be done about that DLSU player Brian Ilad. A punch to the back of the head? What he did was totally uncalled for!

But this was not the first time this effin’ player got suspended from a game. During the St. Martin’s Cup (during the summer months), Ilad punched UST’S Jervy Cruz at the right cheek. Before that, though during the same tournament still, he was caught in a brawl with a player from Lyceum. Two suspensions in one tournament? wtf.

i suggest that Ilad should not be tolerated and that he should not play with the team anymore. Is this what a college basketball player should be? No F***ING WAY!

good job though to the la salle team for coming down on ilad, (if this was true) and not tolerating such atrocious behavior.

Ilad, be like Chris Tiu instead who plays amazing cool-headed basketball, has brilliant intellect and good looks to boot! Hahaha he is indeed our school’s golden boy 😀

enough about the previous post talk..this is what i expect from an intelligent, proud mind. I really hoped Lasalle prevented the sweep, UE has a bad final 4 history and my school beat them twice last year. Furthermore, the do or dies games on Monday would have been awesome! Anyhow, we still have a chance of watching that if NU wins Saturday.

Your columns, although mostly good, are from the point of view of a Lasalista. Now if only there would be like a columnist from each of the 8 schools I think this site would boast of a boost in popularity. Please think about it. I’d certainly want to post for my alma mater.

Segway: Salinggawi wins it again this year people….

Tomasino,

Just like what I said in another post, the Jojo Duncil issue has been buried under the rug. You guys are not in the position to even criticize Tony Atayde or La Salle for that matter. (Damn, why am I defending Mr. Atayde here?)

The appropriate title should be, “Just Another Day of Infamy”.

Kudos goes to JV Casio and , oh no, Franz if the report is indeed true.

Banish him form La Salle and the UAAP for the rest of his life. Ilad should have been disciplined by La Salle a long long time ago.

You don’t need inboundpass.com to sing praises to yourselves. Thomasians have PEX anyway.

tatayde, yung first sentence refers to la salle’s 14-game performance. something that has to do also with how well the other teams played and hoping that la salle even played much better. but they didn’t.

yung second statement is about la salle’s game performance against ue yesterday. it was something commendable because ue has a winning streak and la salle managed to put them in overtime. yun lang.

Stewie,

So in that context, the statement above would mean that what La Salle “achieved” is an overtime loss to UE? one that they “could have dreamt they would”?

WOW, your players sure have high hopes for themselves when they consider an overtime loss an “achievement beyond their wildest dreams”.

Aim High DLSU! lol

This is what I saw Mr. Atayde. Today I saw a ghost of a once proud franchise and a team that has lost their identity.

There was a time when I respected DLSU and actually enjoyed the rivalry because I know those on the other side (the green side) carried themselves with respect and pride. Gone are the Allado’s, Mon Jose’s, Ritualo’s, Cuan’s. Those who had the privilege of watching these guys would know that they did not only win championships, they acted like champions too. They did not only how to win, they know how to act after winning.

I don’t know what happened but they were replaced by the Cardona’s, the Maierhofer’s, Ilad’s, Yeo’s, Arana’s. They got replaced by arrogant, self-serving individuals without any class at all. These guys do not know how to conduct themselves when they win (imagine Maierhofer’s reaction when he thought he TIED – not won – the game; or Arana’s dancing) AND neither when they lose (protests? cheap shots?)

There was a time when DLSU didn’t need to protest games. There was a time when DLSU didn’t need to field in illegitimate players to win games. There was a time when DLSU excuded pride and DIGNITY.

Sadly, this is not that time.

As I said in my column, Ilad should be banned for the rest of the season. If the UAAP does not do this, then La Salle has to take the matter into their own hands and ban him. He has been a loose canon ever since he joined La Salle. He is an embarrassment to the team.

14 09 2007
The Green Mind

Choggs,

There was a time when players played for school honor and not for scholarships and other perks.

There was a time when academics were as important as basketball skills to play for the school.

There was a time that players were homegrown rather than recruited.

There was a time when players did not have to resort to falsifying high school documents, birth certificates and other eligibility documents.

There was time when players would end their collegiate careers and graduate from college at the same time.

Times have changed and unfortunately the changes have not been good.

UE vs ATENEO in the finals.

14 09 2007
The Green Mind

The way the season has shaped up, only UE belongs to a class on its own. NU wont just lie down and let Ateneo win. Im sure they want to at least be remembered as the spoiler of Season 70. FEU is the most unpredictable team among the Final 5. UST wont just give up. Pido and his boys have shown resiliency. La Salle may be down but still not out. Ateneo has found ways to win.

WHAT A GREAT WAY TO ENTER THE FINAL 4!

14 09 2007
ano ba talaga?

Ano ba talaga?

first, they disappoint versus “La Sallian community” expectations. next breathe, they are overachievers in the ue game.

fact is, la salle came into this season as the overwhelming favorites to win it all based on their performance in the pre-season. u can spin it all you want, but that’s the truth.

“Ateneo has to beat NU this weekend to secure 2nd place. But history shows that Ateneo has a tendency to lose their next game after they beat La Salle.” — History also says that La Salle usually wins their next game after a loss to ateneo. Look what happened.

Hasty generalization sir. But at the end of the day, why pit the other schools against ADMU? Are we in kindergarten? How old are you sir?

What makes matters worse is just right after you post this article you have Ilad hitting Fampulme from behind. Enough is enough. Before you cast another stone, your school has to clean house first. In 2002, a player from PCU punched Rich Alvarez in a post UAAP tournament. PCU admin expelled that player. Let’s see what your school will do.

season ’68 – la salle asst. manager manny salgado gets banned for life from UAAP games (UAAP games – guess that includes chess, huh?)for hitting arwind santos. season ’69 – la salle gets suspended in all UAAP games for fielding ineligible players. season ’70 – la salle player brian ilad does a manny salgado-like fadeaway sapak to the back of the head of a UE player – – turns out its a three-peat ‘cos he got into two fights in the fr. martin cup. nice. great tradition, la salle.

what happend could be a serious matter for the whole UAAP and lasalle community right now, but it could be the key for DLSU in their run going into the finals. That’s what they need, a strong motivation for their players to react efficiently.

About my gawi comment, gash all you want..i dont care about the cheerdance..i just want to see:
1.) Admu lose to NU, a longshot I know and Ateneans will lambast me but I have a good reason. I want them to lose so that there would be an Ateneo-Lasalle game on Monday in a twinbill with the FEU-UST game.
2.) Brian Ilad get thrown out of the league. Folks he had 3 scuffling incidences already, this aint Hockey.
3.) Of course I would want my alma mater UST to repeat or underdog FEU to go all the way with another rookie coach winning it all. Remember that the past couple of years, rookie coaches have brought home the bacon.

I’ve been a big fan of the league since I was young, indeed it has changed a lot.

Why cant all players be like Casio, Jervy, Tiu? Arguably the three biggest stars in the league today but also three of the more level headed players I have ever seen in the UAAP.

Amen warped, amen. Atayde, Why not apologize to the entire UAAP community for that matter? You did on your other article, apologizing to the 6 other schools for terms like ‘jologs’ being thrown their way, when in fact nobody’s calling these teams ‘jologs’. Looks like La Salle showed that they only way it knew how to win was to cheat. Hard fouls, punches at the back of the head, and illegal players are perhaps part of the repertoire of La Sallian traits that are inculcated and reinforced. Perhaps La Salle should launch a protest against UE, because Fampulme’s head got in the way of Ilad’s fist.

I do not know if La Salle ( the school, the alumni and the student body ) realizes it, but what Ilad and Maierhofer did, dealt a tremendous blow to the image of the school, which was just recovering from the illegal players scandal. It also shows that they did not learn anything from the scandal or learned the wrong lessons.

La Salle should not wait for the UAAP board for disciplinary action. It should act quickly to show that these types of actions are not in line with the values that the school wishes to inculcate in its students. It should drop Ilad permanently from its roster and perhaps bench Maierhofer for the rest of the season. There are more important things than winning.

The UE players showed a lot of class, maturity and discipline despite playing with a bunch of thugs and enforcers. Definitely they had more class than La Salle. I take my hat off to Fampulme for keeping his cool despite being taunted by the ENTIRE La Salle team and getting punched to boot. I guess, he delivered his vengeance by draining that critical shot in the dying minutes of overtime that delivered the coup de grace to La Salle.

As a final note, perhaps the reason why Casio missed one of his foul shots and Maierhofer could not catch the inbound pass was simply because GOD was watching.

I am a columnist for La Salle. Can’t you guys get it? Of course I will side with La Salle. The name of my column is THE GREEN MIND. GREEN AS IN LA SALLE!!!!!!

Next year, those of you who may want to write for your school, willl definitely be welcome to do so.

– I guess my request/suggestion hit it big. I definitely think this will boost te site’s popularity. Also, this will make everything equivocal. Tell me what to do and how to do it and I will want to be a columnist for UST.

wye,

I’m sure you would be a good addition to the inboundpass.com group. Ill let Mike Abasolo know and find a way to get in touch with you.

Now, if people from the other UAAP and NCAA schools would want to try out for a columnist for your school, just say so.

The Green Mind, before you accept wye in inboundpass, pa define mo muna sa kanya yung word na equivocal. He said in his post, “…this will make everything equivocal.” Baka ma equivocal lang tayong lahat dito.

goy, wala akong sinabing sasapakin ko si ilad. at yung statement ko was a figure of speech which means i will not agree if a la salle player again does what ilad did. i used sapak as a metaphor.

pero kung tunay na sapakan ang paguusapan, hindi ako aatras kahit si ilad pa yan o ikaw. baka gusto niyo pabugbog ko pa kayo sa mga frat brads ko.

Stewie,

Before anyone is accepeted into the climnist pool of inboundpass, they would of course have to be evaluated by Mike Abasolo,

Yes, Chris Tiu has one year to go. He sat out one UAAP season to be an exchange student in France.

Who will be graduating from DLSU nga ba?

I would like to stress how the UAAP committee first reacted on the punching incident thrown by DLSU’s ILAD to UE’s Fampulme. They just nodded away for a few minutes on the real incident as if its just an ordinary fist fight of the unknown that they’re watching…or it was because the aggravated party was not from UP,La Salle or Ateneo?

It was clearly from the voice of DLSU’s TJ Manotoc’s biased comments when he said “It is part of the intensity of the game…” while it was clearly an amatuerish behaviour on the part of this player “ILAD”. He should be banned for life in any basketball league. I suggest a change of career for “ILAD”… try shifting to boxing or wrestling.

It was from what I’ve seen a show of might! when mike mierhoffer deliberately slammed the face of borboran and when confronted by fampulme, instead of saying “sorry” he showed act of disrespect by angrily stared-back and mocking all UE Red Warriors. What a stupid, arrogant, full of S#$$ players of DLSU. I am pretty sure if the incident happened the other way around… the news will be capitalized and they will even slap a penalty not to the accused player but also to the school and this will be aired on TV and also circulated in all frontpages of daily broad-sheets.

the voice of DLSU’s TJ Manotoc tells it all from his biased comments when he said “It is part of the intensity of the game…” while it was clearly an amatuerish behaviour on the part of this player “ILAD”.
