Ateneo slammed into a wall

15 09 2007

Everybody thinks the Bulldogs are just too overrated. After having a considerably strong line up, they annoy everyone when they started to plummet. Then eventually, they failed to make it to the final four.

But just in time, as they wind down their season, the Bulldogs proved how a spolier team they can be if they are overlooked. After shocking the Ateneo Blue Eagles, who were aiming for the twice to beat advantage of the Final Four series, in an overtime victory, 96-88, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium last September 15.

Jonathan Fernandez made 6 out of 11 huge three-point shots and bagged a total of 24 points for the Bulldogs. Edwin Asoro pitched in for 16 points and grabbed 12 boards. Ford Arao led the Blue Eagles with 22 points and 10 rebs.

“All of them should be given credit,” said proud Coach Manny Dandan pertaining to his boys who obviously showed great energy in the game.

Ateneo showed early enthusiasm in the game igniting a 7-0 run in the first 3 minutes of the game. Arao completed a three-point play with 3:17 minutes in the first quarter that gave Ateneo a clear 8-point margin, 15-7. The quarter ended with the Bulldogs trailing behind the blue shirts, 19-14.

Both teams struggled to score in the second period with NU scoring only 8 points while Ateneo nailed only 12 in the quarter. The 1st half ended with Ateneo on top, 31-22.

The Bulldogs started to sizzle with Asoro spearheading a 10-0 run in the first 4-minute stretch of the 2nd half. Michael Salvado’s 18-footer tied the game at 31 with 7:13 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

Fernandez nailed back to back three pointers at the 6:40 minute mark and at the 5:21 minute mark in the 3rd. His efforts put the Bulldogs in the driver’s seat, 34-31.

Chris Tiu’s three point bomb brought Ateneo closer, 39-38, with 4:36 minutes left. But Fernandez and Salvado nailed two threes just before the end of the quarter ends to enjoy a 7-point NU lead.

In the fourth quarter, Ateneo created a 7-0 run with 4:44 minutes to play to tie the ballgame at 59-all. Jai Reyes made a basket that gave back the lead to Ateneo, 61-59, with 4:23 minutes left to play. The Bulldogs played a small line-up composed of Malagueno, Jahnke, Asoro, Salvado and Fernandez for speed, quickness, hustle and a different look for Ateneo.

Melvin Baloran’s three-point shot was immediately answered by Arao who completed a three-point play at 3:54, 64-62, for the Blue Eagles. Cyrus Malagueno answered back nailing a three but Zion Laterre was there for the reply for a one-point Ateneo lead.

Baloran nailed 1/2 FT and once again the game was tied at 66 with 2:47 to play. Then Reyes made a huge three-pointer, 69-66.

With 1:32 minutes left in the clock, Fernandez missed an attempt but Asoro was there for the follow-up. Eric Salamat made another basket and the lead was back to three for Ateneo, 71-68.

Salvado missed one of two FT’s that cut the lead to two, 71-69. With 20 seconds left in the game, Jonathan Jahnke missed a jumper but Asoro, once again was there for the offensive board and nailed a basket that sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, Jahnke stepped up early banking 6 points in the first 3 1/2 minutes of the extension period for a comfortable 7-point lead, 78-71.

Tiu’s 18-footer was replied with back to back three-pointers from Fernandez, extending the Bulldogs lead to twelve, 88-76.

Eman Monfort’s back to back three pointers in the dying seconds of the ball game were not enough to anwer NU’s attack. NU led by 8-points, 96-88.

“We were all forwards kanina kasi kailangan may ma-match up sa mga big men nila na mabibilis,” said Coach Manny.

This is the last season for National University Bulldogs players – Lingao-Lingao, Malagueno, Salvado and Fernandez.

Meanwhile, after the loss, Ateneo will again play La Salle for a play-off on Thursday at the Cuneta Astrodome. This game will determine which team will be awarded the twice to beat advantage in the Final Four.

Now that I am filled with glee, can I now join the Ateneo Glee Club? Joke lang.

I was expecting (not hoping) Ateneo to win. But it just happened. I’m happy because this gives La Salle the chance to grab the second place slot and the twice-to-beat advantage that goes with it.

In the upcoming game between La Salle and Ateneo, La Salle will win.

possibility kaya that UAAP told ateneo to drop the game because they know that if ateneo loses, there would be another ateneo-la salle matching that comes with the high-ticket sales?

redredred,

I dont think that any team would intentionally drop a game. Ateneo did not want even the remotest possibility of having to end up in 3rd. Remember that both La Salle – Ateneo games were close and only the brekas decided the game. It is just not something that any team would do.
