NCAA Finals: Red Lions take Game 1 compliments of Menor

19 09 2007

IT seems the Knights’ clogging “D” could contain anyone except Rogemar Menor.

The third year forward delivered when it mattered most as San Beda posted a decisive 76-68 win over Letran to move to within one-game in retaining its title in the 83rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament last September 19 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Menor, a member of many-time junior championships with the Red Cubs, pumped in nine of his 23 points in the 4th quarter, including a lay up and a triple to turn the 53-all deadlock to a 58-53 lead with still 6:28 minutes to go.

“I just followed what coach Frankie (Lim) told me in terms of plays and executions,” said Menor, who shot 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and hit 8-of-11 from the field. “He also encouraged me to shoot if I’m open. So I don’t want to let him down.”

He also added two baskets in the last two-minute mark, giving the Red Lions an almost untouchable advantage, 70-60, with only 1:37 minutes to go.

The victory has given the SBC Red Lions a one-game advantage in the Best-of-three championship series over the Knights, who needed to win the next two games next week to avoid a sweep and force a do-or-die Game 3.

“It wasn’t so easy and that’s a fact,” said Frankie Lim, the SBC mentor, said, referring to the game. “We really struggled in the first three quarters due to Letran’s defense, but my players played with a lot of heart to overcome it.”

Actually it was Letran that had an early edge going to second quarter, 23-14. The truth is, it was a dog fight from the opening tip till the end of the 3rd quarter.

Rafael Jazul, who led the Knights with 17 points, drilled in 9-points in the first quarter and Rey Guevarra fired seven of his 11 points to give Letran an early advantage. But that wasn’t enough to demoralize the Red Lions.

San Beda erased a nine-point first quarter deficit by outscoring Letran in the second quarter, 21-11, and by halftime, San Beda seized the edge at halftime, 35-34.

Pong Escobal, who got 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, provided San Beda its first lead – 27-25 – after hitting a three-point play with 5:05 minutes to go in the second quarter.

The Knights kept the game close in the third period as they leveled the Red Lions’ third quarter production, 13-13, to start the last 10 minutes of regulation behind by only 1, 47-48.

The last time Letran took the lead was when Jazul scored a jumper with 8:51 minutes to go for a 51-50 count.

San Beda team captain and pro-bound Yousif Aljamal, who struggled most of the way contributed 12 points, hit a triple to regain the lead, 53-51. While the Knights’ Carlo Reposar tied the count at 53-all after making two free throws with 7:34 minutes to go.

From there, the heroics of Menor came in. San Beda uncorked a scorching 13-4 burst capped by the five straight points of Menor and Escobal’s lay up for a 66-57 lead with 3:14 to go.

But San Beda, at last, was able to break Letran’s defensive schemes when Menor sparked the Red Lions’ rally.

“He is (Menor) really tough and he gives me a hard time of choosing who will guard him,” said Letran mentor Louie Alas. “The kid really played a lot of heart today. He outsmarted all my defenders.”

Last year’s Rookie-MVP Samuel Ekwe produced 14 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and swatted away four Letran attempts in 40 minutes of action.

San Beda registered 31-out-of-61 (51%) from the field against Letran’s 26-out-of-72 (36%). The game posted 11 deadlocks and 8 lead changes.

Individual scores:

San Beda 76: Menor 23, Escobal 17, Ekwe 14, Aljamal 12, Hermida 4, Taganas 4, Lanete 2, Gamalinda 0.

LC 68: Jazul 17, Guevarra 11, Faundo 9, Quinday 7, Gutilban 7, Daa 6, Reposar 6, Del Rosario 3, Dangcal 2, Cabonce 0, Melegrito 0.

Quarter scores: 14-23, 35-34, 48-47, 76-68

Go San Beda Fight!
This makes letran wanna take a shower!
Be ready for next wednesday’s game. That would be an all-out-war. San Beda Red Lions and the whole of San Beda community are ready for the battle. Come Wednesday, we shall clinch the most coveted NCAA Championship trophy and have those fireworks illumunate the sky.

Leizzhy, leave God out of this, this is just college basketball, will you? I understand you Bedans hold a grudge against us Letranistas for all of the past humiliations we have heaped on you in the NCAA. The title drought and all that stuff. Its all bottled up, I know. Guess what, we’re not sorry. Its like a badly produced Pinoy teleserye, waiting to explode, no? But now that you have a giant of an import to boost your campaign, this is indeed your opportunity to take advantage. But we will not go down without a fight. It is a sport, and as in tennis, its all about the human struggle. “We cannot win, no we cannot. But we shall meet them in the battlefield none the less.”–King Theoden, LOTR.

i have a question, why is that 30% of the letran crowd are from their grade school? nakakaawa naman sila, 2pm pa lang andun n cla para magcheer sa juniors, required b cla?

i like the defense of letran but not enough until to the last minute of the basketball action as the Red Lions prevailed Game 1.

Another Championship is not impossible only if the San Beda Red Lions will play well offensively and defensively.

Sarap Maging Bedista 🙂

We Bedans always make it a point that in everything we do, we do it for God’s glory and name. May it be in sports, academics, work or anything else we make sure to glorify his name. Nothing wrong with that.

And yeah we waited for 28 years for this but you are not the only reason why we had to wait this long. We had many battles to overcome and you were just one of them. Let’s just wait and see next Wed, goodluck to our teams! Here’s to an exciting finish to Season 83!

By your post, it seems that you’re the one who’s holding a grudge. Yes, your Knights have won all those titles in the past. Well, good for you and your school. That was no small feat and deserves the utmost adulation and awe from all that follow pinoy college hoops.

You’re mistaken though about all those years of humiliation by the Knights and Bedans having a grudge against Letran. The last time these two schools met in the finals was 57 years ago.

The last school that beat San Beda in the finals was the Rommel Adducul led San Sebastian Stags in two straight finals appearance in 1996 and 1997. Before that, it was the heartbreaking upset courtesy of Benny Cheng’s Cardinals in 1991. For many years before, between and after those seasons the Red Lions had forgettable performances in the NCAA. To make a long story short, San Beda has had a spotty record in the NCAA since 1978. This title run by San Beda is not fueled by the desire to exact revenge on Letran or any other school. It is fueled by the desire to win, nothing more, nothing less. You give your school too much credit.

Since you’re so passionate about Sam Ekwe’s being ineligible to play in the NCAA, why not petition your school to file a formal protest? But I’m pretty sure you won’t because either way it works to your advantage.

If San Beda wins you will always have the lame excuse that they won because of an import. You will always claim that you won through a moral victory. Convenient, isn’t it?

On the other hand, if Letran wins you’ll be smug and take comfort in the belief that you won without having to field a foreign cager.

Am I reading that correctly?

franzi jay,
What’s the big deal with what i said. I can’r understand why bad blood runs in your veins that fast. Is there something wrong with glorifying the Lord for a triumph achieved? Well, San Beda has inculcated in us the value of humility and “fear of the Lord.” Those are virtues we live and will continue to live up forever.

Bader Malabes, Kirk Long, Zion Laterre, Bornancin of UP, any of those who i mentioned has 0% Filipino BLOOD either. So, what is the problem of other schools against SAM EKWE?

Billy moody ba kamo??? he was drafted by san miguel a few years back, in fact, back and forth nga sya sa roster ng san miguel eh..he was one of molet pineda’s prize finds (along with willie miller) na mga local fil-ams, kaya imposible na import sya, asus, itsura pa lang eh..san beda actually found a loop-hole long forgotten by most ncaa and uaap teams, ung pwede ka kumuha ng import pero only 2 per team, take a look at the other college teams like dlsu and admu, saka lang sila nagsikuha nung imports coz of ekwe…i respect bedans, lalo na ung mga galing beda high…kasi ako kahit hindi lc ngayon intense na lc supporter ako coz of my grassroots background..pero ung mga ibang arrogant na taga beda na (lalo na ung mga college na biglang beda lang) kala mo kung sino na porke champs lang sila last year eh all out na sila na parang bidang bida na sila ng lahat, poseurs sila lahat para sakin…pero i still give props to the current beda program, who knows where menor, marcelo and the other red cubs couldve ended up playing for if not for the the huge improvement in their program..im not ranting here guys..these are facts that im stating..in my opinion, whoever wins this series is the best team in local college ball right now..sosy lang kasi ung marketing ng uaap saka saksakan ng oa ung coverage nila..even the ue red warriors doesnt have enough balls to square with the knights and the red lions..hehe..

wow ah, sounds like peeps were offended by my comments, well sorry, coz yes, even if you say some bedans are not arrogant, marami pa rin ang ganon, same goes with letran, may mga ganon din samin, ang akin lang, if you’re just a bandwagon fan and your school’s doing good dont be too cocky about it na parang walang kwenta na talaga ung ibang teams compared to yours..and to that guy who said that nc teams can’t beat uaap teams any given day, hhmm…galing ni mark borboran noh? san ba sya galing before? ah ok..jru nga pala..ehehe..kanya kanya nga lang yan and since im entitled to my own opinion, my expert analysis right now is that nc teams really are better than uaap teams…nc teams are more physical and have more balls so to speak..ue’s a great team and all, sweeping both elimination rounds..but even they had trouble beating jru and beda even defeated them in the preseason leagues..uaap teams are soft..there, i said it, the only reason some teams in uaap are great is because of their recruits from the nc juniors and provinces…name one uaap junior who’s dominating now in uaap? hmm..cant think of anyone…as for ekwe being a soccer player before…man..he’s one big-ass soccer player..couldve made one helluva goalie..sorry if you guys were offended, all my buddies in college are from beda high kaya araw araw talagang may mga debates kami tungkol jan..peace out fellas…
