Blue Eagles will face the Green Archers for the 4th time, maybe 5th

“We want La Salle.”

Fans wearing blue and white showed how hungry they are for another match with their ultimate rival De La Salle as the Ateneo Blue Eagles crushed the defending champions, University of Santo Thomas, 69-64, at the Araneta Coliseum last September 23.

The Growling Tigers have now lost their chance of vying for the title in this 70th season of the UAAP.

Ford Arao spearheaded the Blue Eagles’ quest, making 17 points while Chris Tiu and Nonoy Baclao tipped in 14 ad 11 points, respectively. Baclao also tallied 3 blocks.

Jervy Cruz made a huge double-double topping the Growling Tigers’ score sheet with 17 points and grabbing 16 boards. Dylan Ababou and Mark Canlas backed up with 14 and 16 points, respectively.

Arao showed enthusiasm early in the game scoring a hefty 6 points of Ateneo’s 10 in the first quarter that ended 18-10 for UST. In the second period, the Blue Eagles outscored the yellow shirts, 22-12.

Tiu sank an 18-footer with 9:35 in the clock to start the quarter and cut the lead to five. Cruz nailed back to back jumpers with 6:19 minutes to play that stretched the Growling Tigers’ lead back to 7.

Ateneo sparked a big 6-0 run in the final 3 minutes of the quarter including a shot from Jai Reyes that tied the game at 30 with 2:09 minutes in the regulation. The Blue Eagles outran the Growling Tigers, 32-30, before halftime.

In the third quarter, Canlas and Ababou made a combined 13 third quarter points to keep UST’s bid burning.

But Ateneo continued to dominate, igniting another 7-0 run in the first 4 minutes stretch to lengthen their lead to 11, 41-30.

Canlas completed a three-point play with 4:05 minutes left in the clock that cut the lead down to five, 46-41.

Ababou also finished a three-point play after grabbing a miss from Japs Cuan and getting a foul. The lead was down to just two points with 3:32 minutes in regulation.

Francis Allera nailed a basket from behind the arc that made it just a single-point ball game for Ateneo.

Rabeth Al-Hussaini made 3/4 FTs for a 4-point Ateneo lead but Canlas answered back with a beautiful finish with 1:25 minutes in the clock. Ateneo led by four, 55-51, after three quarters.

Both contenders heat up in the fourth quarter after Zion Laterre was called for a pushing foul as he completes a footback.

Eric Salamat completed a three-point play as his hang time move over Cruz awarded him bonus free throws for a 7-point Ateneo lead with 6:28 minutes left in the clock.

Ababou once again took a basket from downtown that cut the lead back to five, 65-60, with 2:11 minutes in the game.

With 5.5 second remaining, Coach Norman Black became furious as the table officials mistakenly called a time out for Ateneo.

With their match against La Salle for the fourth time this year, Coach Norman Black predicted it is going to be a tough game.

Coach Norman Black Post Game Interview:

“We have three days off to prepare. We’ll start concentrating on La Salle tomorrow but for now we’re gonna celebrate the victory.” “Here we go again,” he added.

The curse of the host continues. The absence of Mirza’s 3 pointers spelled the difference. But to think that with the way UST’s offense couldnt find its mark, you would have thought that Ateneo would have run away with the game. But UST hung in there but just did not get the breaks.

Seeing Pido cry at the end of the game showed me that his commitment to his team is am example to many coaches. Hats off to you Pido!

okay lang yan ust. meron pa next year, and a year after next, etc. dlsu was suspended last year but this year we’re going for the gold. one season at a time.

and dlsu will win over admu again on thurs. we already have our eyes on ue.

It wasn’t a pretty game at both ends as both teams struggled. More so for UST as Mirza’s 3-balls repeatedly rimmed out. Malas din talaga.

Not denying anything from ADMU though..Norman Black coached a hell of a game. His 4th quarter defensive adjustment on Jervy..marvelous. Of course, UST being of target from beyond the arc helped them sag down on the leading MVP candidate.

Congratulations Ateneo..you got the best of us this time.

UST, let us not be ashamed nor lose hope. We fought well and hard the whole season and we bow down with pride. Next year we no longer have that bullseye being the defending champs and that will ease the load. Underdog nanaman tayo guys! Let us again surprise the whole world..till next year Uste! Thank you Pido! Viva Santo Tomas!

Excellent defense by ADMU on Mirza and Cruz. Mirza was limited to only 1 field goal I think! Also he was rushing his shots because of the defense that’s why he missed so much. Excellent defensive gameplan executed by the eagles.

one game lang ang ipe-prepare ng la salle against ateneo. la salle does not want to be that tired when they face ue in the finals.

The tigers fought but the eagles fought harder. Ateneo wanted the win more, wanted the archers more. Seems Ateneo is really destined to meet the archers again and this time for the semis, then so be it. And the rivalry still continues and the curse of a host team not to win Senior’s Basketball championshp still lives on.

Ateneo, you had your One Big Fight and succeeded, but definitely proved not yet the last one. See you next year and goodluck with the archers and if ever, the warriors.

The best of luck for the remaining three teams, may the best squad wins!

Co-Thomasians, still be proud! Tigers fought at their best as they can be. They brought us a number of exciting games that are really remarkable this season. Let this be then serve as a challenge for the community that despite not bagging this year’s crown, we should still believe more that good things are just yet to come again for USTe but maybe not for now. Hey, there’s still General Championship to look forward to and other sports in UAAP to support for anyway.

Thanks Pido. Your influence simply driven the whole thomasian community with you’re very positive attitude.. “Pride, puso, palaban…”
Kudos to you then for a job well done.

Till next year guys, thank you!

Viva Santo Tomas!!

It really was a great game played by two great teams. I could really see the hunger for the win in the faces of the players for both squads. Congratulations to both teams! I really admire the UST community for their passion and school spirit, much as Pido’s passion for his service as Head Coach. It is rare to find a leader as good as him that professes “the buck stops here”.

One question though… What happened during the courtesy cheer portion, UST? BBB played UST’s “Go USTe” cheer as a sign of respect and salutaion. But instead of playing the Ateneo 8-beat, UST played a La Salle cheer. Tuloy, napatugtog ng UP cheer ang BBB. Sayang. It would have been nice sana.

It should show La Salle the other side of having the twice-to-beat advantage. Although you would only need one win to advance to the finals, and Ateneo is running tired with the most number of games played, you would be competing against a team that is literally fighting as if it was their last game. La Salle would be competing against the squad that dethroned the defending champions. And La Salle would be competing against the team that is itching to take back the Sept 18 loss. I’m sure La Salle would be more than prepared for us on Thursday. I just hope it would be as exciting and as passion-filled as the previous games.

BUT, none of the crappy calls from the refs and the technical committee sana diba! … Grabe, that time out was a really ridiculous mistake!! Any team would have raised hell if that happened to them. I hope the officials would be more responsible.

FROM A DLSU FORUM: on what they need to beat AdMU

Keep off the foul penalties in the 1st 3 quarters. On the 4rth quarter, if we are playing catch up in the last 6 minutes, give up the fouls but let’s make them all HARD FOULS so they can feel it!

I have nothing to say about the game played by ATENEO, I know how they play and how to win the game. They are not so hot, not pikon and and not noisy inside the court ….they are all well discipline in and out of the game. They respect other people opitions and what ever they wanted to say what ever it is its only a game….”Bilog ang Bola ika nga” …..thanks to TY Tang he was so amazed together with his long time friend Chris Tiu of Ateneo, what ever happens they’re still friends

parang kailan lang champion sa CDC, men’s at women’s basketball ang uste. how the mighty have fallen. and yes the YJ showed their lack of class by playing the DLSU beats. last year’s finals was a show of class by both ateneo and ust with the pre-game courtesy cheers. a lot has changed over a short period of time, grabe.

i thought ust will beat ateneo and dlsu to face ue in the finals. but after they showed their true colors, i’m very happy they lost. they got too cocky. nag-iiyak pa yung coach nila to keep his job.

25 09 2007

pido cried because it was really his fault. he did not have enough coaching bag of tricks against norman black, and even the two pumarens. he was scouted last year.

he cried because he thinks he deserves to be fired because of the unexpected loss, he is even thinking of resigning (as told on papers). he is a gentleman because he cried in front of people, showing that he really loves the school that much.

a championship and a fourth place finish in two years is fair enough for two years of coaching. learn the basics first fools.

if what you say is true, then he should resign no matter what. if he truly think that it is his fault and that he is incompetent, he should submit an irevocable resignation. it doesn’t matter if ust wants to stick with him or not. if he knows he failed his team ,then it’s time to go. if he keeps his job, i’d still think he cried because he wanted to keep it

c’mon! Pido is just in his second year. Resigning is not even an option for a coach who’s just getting started in the league. A championship in his rookie year just simply proved he has also coaching potential. Losing is just a part of the game. You win some, you lose some. Iba naren talaga kapag kinapitan ka ng malas e. Like in the last game, I don’t see much of Jervy in the last quarter. Khazim was totall off. Pido cried because he was thinking that time that he was not able to meet the expectations of the thomasian community- winning it all. You must give credit to Coach Pido as he had driven his players and even the UST followers with his positive and winning attitude..”Pride, Puso, Palaban!”, that led them to the finals last year and winning it and at least kept them a 4th runner up finish this season. I certainly believe he was successfully able to get the whole thomasian community re-united even just in UAAP and hats off to him for that. There will be more for UST, more for Pido. Everything for him and for the team is just getting started.

YES – “what do you expect? paluin nila yung ateneo beat pagkatapos ng lahat na nangyari ”

its a little concept called SPORTSMANSHIP. being the hosts this year, embodying it would be the least that they could do. We did it last year, its not inconcievable.

“at dlsu pep, pataubin nyo mga mayayabang ng bbb” -> considering the recent events concerning the la salle pep, I conclude that this statement is just really asking for it; desperate for attention and replies. Therefore, I dare say it would be better not to pay him mind.

26 09 2007

aminin mo na kasi. asar talo ang yjs kaya nila ginawa yun. they were expecting their team to run over ateneo and barge their way to the finals like last year. as i have said before, di naman kasalanan kung di sila pumalo ng ateneo cheers. it would have been perfectly fine. kung tumahimik na lang sana sila, walang usapan. kaso pumalo pa sila ng dlsu beats, gusto pang magyabang bago umuwing luhaan. ang tawag dun pikon, bata! tameme naman nung pumalo ng unibersidad yung bbb.

i expect the dlsu pep and bbb to show respect that you people can’t. a few dlsu fans were cheering for ust after dlsu defeated ateneo. the pep could have EASILY played a ust cheer IF THEY WANTED TO but they didn’t. they respected ateneo as rivals. they showed class. something your yjs do not have, sadly.

Honestly, the back-to-back NU/LaSalle losses really hurt because that would mean Ateneo would face UST. It is a team I respect to the point that I can almost say that I fear them. They are a big team with a lot of weapons (namely: the tall wingmen and Gervy Cruz) and championship experience. I hoped that our business with UST ended with the “Kirk Long Shot” but unfortunately, fate had another plan and we had to face them yet again.

The night before the game, I was watching a sports TV show on ANC heavily favoring UST. This was really disheartening because even if my heart was for Ateneo, UST was the logical choice for the win.

Right now, looking at the situation, I guess it all happened for the better. Ateneo finally avenged last year’s loss, this time, as an underdog. Ateneans showed their heart and courage when it mattered the most. Even if Ateneo is currently running the gauntlet towards the finals, I guess it becomes a greater achievement compared to taking the “easy route”.

There is no glory in victory if there is peril in the FIGHT!

Go for the Hail Mary Finish Hail Mary Squad! Animo Ateneo. ONE BIG FIGHT!!!
