Hostile Atenean will be banned

25 09 2007

THREE days after failing to retain its title, host University of Santo Tomas has turned its frustration to an irrepressible diehard fan particularly from Ateneo.

The host school, eliminated by Ateneo last Sunday, 64-69, warned the supporters and fans of the three remaining member schools in the tournament namely, Ateneo, De La Salle and University of the East, to be in their proper places while watching the games.

De La Salle enjoys a twice-to-beat advantage over Ateneo, and the winner in that series will face the flawless UE Red Warriors in the a best of three Finals contest.

Secretary-treasurer Felicitas Francisco, through a letter to the UAAP board, is calling on all leaders of the University of the East, Ateneo and La Salle for “good behaviour in the last two weeks of the tournament.”

Francisco said Commissioner Ed Cordero and an Ateneo fan had to be extricated at the end of the Ateneo-UST KO game last September 23 after the Ateneo alumnus taunted Cordero while he and his crew were leaving the playing area.

“There are some alumni who really don’t behave the way they have been educated,” Francisco said. “Let these (basketball) games be an avenue for further camaraderie among schools, their alumni and students, not for hooliganism.”

Although Francisco did not reveal the name of the Ateneo fan, inboundpass.com has managed to identify the fan as Raffy Dayrit according to reliable information from the technical committee.

Dayrit, said by a reliable source who spoke in condition of anonymity, is a 1974 Ateneo High School graduate before moving to University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna.

Cordero had identified the heckler and the UAAP board had already banned him from sitting near courtside.

Francisco also said she was infuriated last Sunday when some UST faculty, who had purchased tickets belonging to Ateneo’s side of the Big Dome, were asked to leave by “fans from the other school when the game started.”

Similar thing happeend to the NCAA during the JRU – CSJL final four meeting, commissioner Narvasa got into a verbal tussle with a fan.

I am wondering what exactly did the Francisco letter refer to as “taunting”. And would it be possible to clarify why both parties had to be extricated instead of just the so-called “hostile fan”. I heard that Ed Cordero didnt exactly exhert effort to avoid a tussle. Lastly, if I may ask, why was it that it was Francisco who wrote the letter to the board instead of Ed Cordero, the aggrieved party?? What exactly is Francisco’s involvement in the incident?

“some UST faculty, who had purchased tickets belonging to Ateneo’s side of the Big Dome, were asked to “leave by fans from the other school when the game had started”
– If they were in the Patron area, it may have been that they were in someone else’s place as the patron and lower box seats are numbered and strictly followed. Otherwise, there are no restrictions as to where to sit. Unless the seats have already been previously taken by the people. I am confused about their advise to the three remaining schools “to be in their proper places while watching the games” – when it were the 3 UST teachers who were in the wrong side.

I remember Francisco being vehemently against cheering during timeouts. But in the last UST game, the UST crowd was doign a human wave the whole time and nothing was being done. Not even a warning was given. I dont see this happening to other schools either or in the Juniors’ and Womens’ games. It seems that she is particularly observant only when the case involves Ateneo or La Salle. What is her beef?? Maybe she should just stick to watching CHESS!

cheer your hearts out

Another case of the Francisco-bias I guess.

When UST mocked the courtesy cheer of the Blue Babble Band last Sunday (playing the Go Uste beat as a show of respect and appreciation) – Francisco did not do anything. She just looked on and walked away.

Yup it is true Mrs Francisco is bias…

Not only in cheering strategy but to controversial things

There’s also an incident that I need their reaction re: the Duncil case but she ignored it.

She just said I should change my topic… How could she tell me that.

Anyway, what the ateneo alumni did last Sunday against Ed Cordero is absolutely wrong.

Nobody should treat the commissioner like that. We at the inboundpass condemned the incident.

That was wrong…

kaya pala walang manners yung nakaaway ni commish e. kulang yung atenean education. kung nakapasok siguro ng ateneo yun nung college baka hindi siya ganyan. haha. peace. just having a bit of fun.

anyway, i agree that when the ust crowd cheers during timeouts, dapat bawalan din sila. ganun siguro talaga. it’s a good thing we’ll see less of our beloved mrs. francisco now that her team is out of contention.

i agree with cheer your hearts out. what the ust band did was distasteful. so they’re only friendly when they are winning or have a shot at winning but when they lose, they turn bitter. i think it was ok when dlsu cheered for/with NU against Ateneo because DLSU will gain something with a win by NU. but to cheer for an opposing team when your team is out already out of contention is absurd. natameme tuloy sila ng UP cheers by the Ateneo crowd. ayan kasi.

Mrs. Francisco should first look into the host’s responsibility to the DLS Zobel basketball team. She should not bother with the other teams.

I can see this as a great opportunity for La Salle, UE and Ateneo to band together and tell Mrs. Francisco that her team is out. Why is she assuming that we cannot police our own ranks?

I AGREE!!! (Im a die-hard Atenean. Taga-UE na lang kumpleto na)

She could add to that the annomalies in the officiating. Example would be the phony timeout the technical commitee called for AdMU last Sunday. Sobrang labo! Any school/ coach would have complained against a mistake like that. Palibhasa it was for the advantage of UST pinaglagpas lang… Buti na lang Coach Norman’s “Black Magic” still worked and we sort of got some justice pa rin by winning despite it.

It seems that the UAAP is not spending enough for venue security and referee compensation. I wonder where it is being spent then? I know that the UAAP is not a publicly listed company but is there a way anyone can inquire about how the money from the fans are being spent??

Mr. Green Mind,
I agree. UST has been eliminated. The remaining schools will and can police our own ranks. UST should police the locker rooms. I am from Ateneo, but what happened to the Junior Archers is really unforgivable. Kawawa naman yung mga ninakawan. They play their hearts out and then they get robbed.

Visiting Vatican envoy sacks top UST priests

(from Manila Standard Saturday September 9, 2007)

If you’re wondering why Pido Jarencio made those statements about being iffy about returning next year, it’s because there’s going to be a lot of change in UST’s hierarchy. Of course, I’d love to see Pido return, but I wonder if the change will extend to their entire sports program. Word is even Mrs. Francisco and Fr. De Sagon will be on their way out because of the changes not by anything else. Whatever happens, this is not a happy report. We hope that UST can reorganize as soon as possible. Viva UST!
___________

At least three priests who were holding sensitive positions at the University of Santo Tomas were sacked last Tuesday (September 4) for alleged mismanagement and irregularities.

Relieved were Edmund Nantes, prior provincial of the Philippine Dominican Province and also UST’s vice chancellor.

Rector Ernesto Arceo, OP, and Vice Rector Juan Ponce, OP, were also asked to resign.

Carlos Aspiroz, OP, the Master of the Order of Preachers, accepted the resignation of the three priests.

Aspiroz was in Manila for a canonical visit, but sources in the university said the grand chancellor’s visit was mainly to stop the expansion of the UST hospital.

“The Master believes that a new leadership team will be better able to create the consensus necessary for future developments at the university and the hospital especially as UST begins preparations for its 400th anniversary in 2011,” said university Secretary General Isidro Abano, OP in a circular that was read during the meeting of deans, regents, and department heads.

The same source told reporters that some priests were among the investors in the hospital and that the investments came to more than Php1 million.

“That bothers the Holy See,” the source said. Aside from the irregularities, the hierarchy of the Dominican Order was reportedly unhappy with the way the university was being managed after it failed to secure the global certification recognizing its compliance with the high standards of education.

With the resignation of the three priests, the grand master named Rolando de la Rosa, OP, acting UST rector until Pope Benedict XVI appoints a new rector. De la Rosa was previously chairman of the Commission on Higher Education.

Guys, she should really put up and shut up for all our sakes..we at our school do not like her too..honestly..she makes it so hard for us to get tickets and she thinks she is such a celebrity (not knowing that whenever we saw her around campus and she smiled at us we would curse her when she passes). So, whatever you have against her..it would be to her alone..and I believe that we don’t care..all we care about is our school and our team..politics sucks eggs.

1. Again. for those who were infuriated by the UST YJ playing the lasalle cheer last Sunday..no excuses but let us give them the benefit of the doubt..BBB and YJ may be very good friends and maybe they were just horsing around. If you got offended by it then it may just have been a misunderstanding.

2. The wave..haha cmon guys, cheers are prohibited during timeouts because the coaches requested that the crowd be quiet in order for them to understand each other better. We even cut the go uste chant when a timeout is called. The wave isn’t a form of a cheer..nor is it noisy enough to distract the huddle.

You are very welcome to throw pitches at mrs.Francisco though..

The wave is even a better thing to do than do the claps and chanting the cheer while the teams are doing the huddle during timeouts. I guess you already know who violates this crap!

nobody knows.. not maybe somebody from the board itself can tell us that or maybe an insider will do. I’m a thomasian but the way the system goes, I don’t even think it is being handled well. From the little things like the way tickets are being released or sold then to security issues that we are now dealing with, the Host at least has necessary actions to make in response to the complains coming from the students, fans and even the players itself. With due respect to Mrs. Francisco, it seems that she’s being vigilant on these issues and yet the actions on their end are nowhere to be found. But I guess its still the UAAP Board has to have the last say on these issues. And so far, we haven’t heard anything yet coming from them regarding the case of the Zobel players. But again, being the host school, shouldn’t they be responsive as well into these issues? Give the UAAP Board a heads up at least? After all, UAAP is for the camaraderie of the teams. It is for the fans, for the students, alumni and players and not only for one institution’s sake. Dapat lahat ang nakikinabang!

i know for a fact that the bbb and yj’d were not messing around. pikon talaga yung yjs mo brad, asar talo. mabait lang pag panalo. last year, after the 3rd game of the finals, the bb b and yjs were goofing around while waiting for their rides. walang pikon. tanggap ng mga atenista na talo sila. walang nagmaasim. kaso di ata talaga marunong tumanggap ng talo yung mga yjs mo.

tama ka dyan doug!!

the fans and the athletes should realize that they are not at the mercy of the UAAP Board. if nadedehado sila… actually TAYO, we should be proactive and do something about it. by the looks of it, we all love our schools and the concept of UAAP. whatever we say, rivalries, die hards and banter aside, UAAP is OURS and not soley the Board’s.

If they are not doing something about it, maybe WE, the fans should.

username,

if only the league is in our hands, why not? I hate to say this but I can’t imagine politics also comes into play at times in them. There was once an issue raised up regarding the ineligibility of some of the players in the league. One player left a team just to simply cut the issue right away even the accusations raised against him was not fully proven. And the other players being also pointed out remained nothing but plain rumors, and I guess never been discussed by the board. Others say they don’t give a big fuss about the issue simply because they don’t want their own mess to be discovered in the public. To add insult to the injury, it seems the board knows the mess of each of everyone and try to conceal them as much as they can. Probably, it’s just a matter of giving chances. If you are to read mosts of the posts on this site, you will also probably know what I am exactly talking about.

Copy of the Ateneo Alumni Email Blast

DEAR ATENEO BOOSTERS AND FANS,

Let’s all thank the Lord for our team’s stirring victory three days ago, putting us back on track in our quest for the coveted championship. As our brave and beloved Blue Eagles prepare for yet another heated battle with our arch-rivals tomorrow and on Sunday, we urgently request:

1. To the passive observers among you, bestir yourselves and cheer our Blue Eagles on to victory after victory.

2. To the greater majority of passionate fans, channel your exuberance and enthusiasm to raucous clapping, cheering, singing and foot-stomping.

3. And yet, refrain from hurling insults and invectives, taunts and jeers at the opposing team, its coaching staff and fans, referees and officials of the UAAP and host school.

Our players have comported themselves properly on- and off-court, throughout the ups and downs of this season, questionable calls and non-calls, accusations and actuations in the media and online fora. We owe it to our Blue Eagles to stay equally focused on the game and to avoid any unruly behavior that may distract our team and detract from our good name as Ateneans. Let’s commit to become accountable for our collective conduct; no need for us to field marshals and enforcers, right? We’re all responsible adults with a lot of youth in tow or in attendance to whom we ought to be upstanding role models.

We are, after all, part of the dreaded Blue Babble Battalion. We are the fabled 6th Man of the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

We are . . . truly . . . one ATENEO, win or lose. Ang sarap maging Atenista!

Animo Ateneo! One Big FIGHT!

To those still furious about what the YJs did..well, if you guys are positive that they were not just goofing around then I agree that they are wrong and should apologize. The season is over for our basketball team and we shouldn’t be sore losers because we aren’t.

Example is Gordonblue. He is using Sen. Gordon and Blue to probably refer to Ateneo. He may not even be an Atenean but he tried to malign both San Beda and UST without any provocation. The article is simply about a hostile Atenean with “no breeding”.

It is sad that UST in general is being brought down by the likes of Mrs. Francisco. A respected university would do better without the likes of her. The bias is quite obvious.

Going to the issue however I have seen Mr. Dayrit’s excessive verbal abuse and I agree with the decision (I disagree with the news however that Mrs Francisco HAD to initiate it). His behavior does not befit his standing as an “Atenean” considering that he makes a poor model for kids that watch the game with him.
