UE can be beaten – Ateneo, La Salle

25 09 2007

For La Salle and Ateneo, unbeaten University of the East is beatable.

For Blue Eagles Coach Norman Black, and La Salle assistant coach Joey Sta. Maria said whoever wins against them in the series is definitely an underdog when it faces the UE Red Warriors, who swept their 14-game assignments.

“They’ve proved that they are the best team after finishing the series without a loss,” said Black in yesterday’s PSA Forum in Shakey’s UN Manila. “But it doesn’t mean that UE can win the title easily. La Salle and Ateneo are both good teams.”

Sta. Maria, represented La Salle mentor Franz Pumaren, also said UE is absolutely balance offensively and defensively.

“UE plays tough in the defensive end and it executes its plays most of the time,” said Sta. Maria. “But UE is not unbeatable. Of course, any of us (La Salle and Ateneo) can surprise them.”

Ateneo dethroned University of Santo Tomas last Sunday, 69-64, to face La Salle, which has a twice-to-beat edge, in the semifinals.

Against La Salle, Black said Ateneo could overcome its twice-to-beat disadvantage if his team will win on September 27.

“Just win the first game,” said Black, referring to De La Salle-Ateneo semifinals series. “Then everything would become equal for both teams. I believe my players have the willingness to make it possible.”

Sta. Maria said La Salle will not give Ateneo a slim chance in the series. “We have to win on Thursday (September 27),” said Sta. Maria. “There is no way we can allow them to force a 2nd Game because we really respect Black as a coach.”

If La Salle wins on Thursday, it would be UE-La Salle in the best-of-three finals that will start on October 4 at the Big Dome.

But an Ateneo win, a winner-take-all match between the two archrivals will be arranged on Sunday, September 30.

The Pumaren brothers did not attend the forum due to various reasons. Dindo had a team practice in the morning, while his older brother Franz had attended a councilor’s session in Quezon City. Franz Pumaren is currently the third district councilor of QC.

I agree.

I believe that whoever wins between Ateneo and La Salle, that team will win the championship this year.

There’s nothing wrong with UE winning the crown. They are definately deserving. They are very talented.

But since we are talking about the finals here, they would have to take into consideration that talent alone will not win the crown. Intangibles just may snatch the title from the Warriors.

Im sure La Salle would want to win this year to redeem their lost season. And Im sure Ateneo would also want to win to redeem their 2006 performance.

The 14 win card of UE proves their desire for the championship title too but it may be their (current team) lack of experience in the Finals that may serve as their Achiles Heel…

Ateneo and LaSalle underdogs?
Yes, for the first time in so many years there is a team more favored than these two. UE may very well prove to be impenetrable..LaSalle came the closest but still could not win the joust in ot.
2 words will spell the difference, bench depth..I tab UE to go 16-0. I still believe that they can beat any pro team right now under amateur rules.
To those saying that UE lacks championship experience..well, that would not be a factor..I could name a handful of teams who have won in their first finals appearance..UST last year, the FEU team of Ronald Magtulis and company in the late 90’s, et al..the only difference is that this UE team may be the very best out of all those finals first timers and that is a scary thought.

If we are to set aside the championship experience, then I would say UE has the edge and their 14-0 can explain that alone. Now, if we are to consider finals experience as a factor, then either Ateneo or La Salle might set the difference. As far as Ateneo and La Salle is concern, at least, most of their players had a chance to play in a championship game, plus their mentors of course. And this would be very interesting. One coach has yet to complete a red blooded season sweep and grab his first ever crown and end his squad’s two decades of championship drought. One coach is set to take a revenge for his gang green after a year of absence and to prove they want it more. One coach is to unleash yet another blackmagic in his hands to give his blue battalion a back to back finals appearance and still looking for his first taste of championship. I guess it’s just a matter of.. WHO WANTS IT MORE?!

say all you want guys. . .all i know is that UE will pull out a couple of victory in d finals and grab the crown! on my own point of view. . .UE is more deserving to receive the crown since last season but a lot of controversy made it impossible 4 them to snatch the big W in the semis bec. of the early and unexplainable exit of their main gunner Custodio. Now that they have the chance and the victory is in their hand, they will NOT allow anybody to steal it from them. . .this historic achievement (14-0 card) is useless unless the gonna win the prestigous crown! UE will finish this season with a BIG BANG!!!

I also think UE deserves it anyway. The ball is round though and anything can happen just in one snap.

If UE wins, they deserve it. good for them! I could see they really worked hard this year. Honestly, takot ako sa UE, feeling ko parating masasaktan mga blue eagles dahil malakas maglaro ang UE. The Blue Eagles arent used to the rough basketball. Kumabaga, their game was not made outside. It was made in the spotless Moro gym, hehe.

Para fair, lets just say that lahat ng FInal Four teams, would have been deserving of the title. Magagaling talaga lahat and lahat gusto talagang manalo. It would come down to WHO WANTS IT MORE lang talaga and kung kanino talaga akma ang panalo ngayong taon.

Good luck to all three schools!!

if UE, somehow, fails to win it all, the won’t win in the next 5 years simply because it will still hurt by that time

i would like to think that the Red Warriors are the underdogs in the finals vs. the Green Archers or the Blue Eagles, because they have more championship exposures & experiences in the last decade or so.

This truly has been one of the most exciting UAAP seasons in recent memory… I dont think anyone can contest that. While it’s true that this is the first time in over a decade that a team has swept the entire eliminations, one cannot deny the fact that the ongoing race for the last finals slot has been thrilling, to say the least… Close matches, drama on and off the court, knock-out game after knock-out game… this is what college ball is all about man! Whoever gets the last finals slot truly deserves it and whoever wins the crown (Ateneo, I hope… hehehe) deserves it even more. Given the hard battles fought during the season, this will surely be one sweet championship for whoever snatches the crown, be it UE, La Salle or Ateneo. I just hope the crowd and the players learn to keep their tempers in check… wag natin dungisan ang napakagandang season na ito. GO ATENEO! OBF!!!

Agreed.
While UE sits pretty waiting for the ADMU (assuming they win twice against DLSU) they are slowly losing their momentum.

Objective outsider

UE has the advantage of feeling invincible, but if ADMU wins on Sunday, they’ll be fueled by 3 straight wins against 2 of the best teams in the league. If La Salle wins, they could very well knock down the Warriors in their bid to redeem themselves after missing last year’s season. What’s two little games against an undefeated team compared to the right to turn to a crowd of blue and say “in your face?” UE’s deep bench though is mighty scary– I’d say each team’s got their work cut out for them.
Great game today. By the way, angriest_man, tama yun english ni anonymous.

The Red Warriors acknowledge that the Blue Eagles & the Green Archers are two of the finest, fiercest, and fittest teams of this league, but they would rather not make any comment on whichever and whatever will happen in the finals series.

27 09 2007
shineya

i think we should watch the game so that whatever happen, we know it, ue doesnt make any comments about this matter, what the 3 teams need to do is to give their best and accept what they have to accept. after all this is not a battle of universities but just a sport. all 3 teams have the guts and the passion for basketball.. we should not compare them because they have their own uniqueness…

Faith!

UE’s undefeated record can possibly be their downfall in the finals. The illusion of invincibility is a weakness that can easily be exploited by the team that they will eventually face. (unfortunately, such is the situation last year for Ateneo and UST with the latter coming away with the championship)

I hope Ateneo humbly learns from their defeats from NU and DLSU. Those losses still have their value. Fall down 7 stand up 8. The road maybe tough but Ateneo still has a chance to vindicate themselves this year one game at a time. For this season, Ateneo is definitely a battle-tested team on their way to the finals.

redemption for 2007! ONE BIG FIGHT!!!

here’s my two cents on this…quote me on this one… the ateneo-la salle series is THE championship series… UE is a sitting duck… game one ng finals, kalawang… by the time they shake off the rust in game two, the other team (ateneo or la salle) will have gained too much momentum for UE to overcome… plus the sweep they had may work against them… they have this feeling of invincibility… Big Mistake

All i can say is that they would win this years’ championship. Coach Dindo have done a great job of building a championship caliber team even without having a go-to-guy. WHich means his philosophy in basketball really applies not as a one man team but as a team in one. UE have kept everyone for this moment since the era of James Yap. Unfortunately, they can’t that is why this team is the real UE Red Warriors that will win it’s 19th crown of the men’s uaap basketball.
