LA SALLE BEATS LA SALLE!

27 09 2007

I have said it many times before and I will say it once again: “LA SALLE IS THE BEST 38 MINUTE TEAM IN THE LEAGUE!” This must have been one the best games La Salle has played yet they lost.

For 38 minutes they held Ateneo at bay. The Blue Eagles were just out of sync and totally lost. The defense of La Salle was awesome. Ateneo looked like a team who just didn’t know what to do.

With 2 minutes left and a 6 point lead, I was again unsure of the outcome. I knew that this was La Salle’s weakness. I knew that they are at their most vulnerable in the last 120 seconds of the game. On the other hand, that’s where Ateneo is most dangerous.

Ateneo took their time even if they were behind by 6. Tiu hits a pressure laden 3, which was Ateneo’s only triple of the game. On the next offensive play by La Salle, who still had the lead, they are running and hurrying. With the 24 second clock winding down, PJ Walsham takes a long shot. With the 24 second clock running down, why even give him the ball? I don’t understand how a veteran player like him will take a long shot when Ateneo’s Baclao, who had 4 fouls, was guarding him. Walsham is a veteran player and yet his shot was just a symptom of what happens to the team in the last 2 minutes.

Then Casio gets a steal and instead of setting up the offense, he drives to the basket on a bad angle and misses the shot badly. Ateneo gets the rebound, sets up a play, takes a shot and misses. But Baclao makes an easy tip in. La Salle takes a hurried shot once again and misses. Ateneo brings the ball down, makes a pick and roll play that gives Chris Tiu a drive to the basket for 2 points and Ateneo leads by 1 with 7 seconds to go.

La Salle has the last play and with Casio, Tang and Maierhofer on the floor, but the ball ends up with Malabes who takes a desperate shot. I don’t understand why Casio or Tang did not take the last shot. Maierhofer driving the lane would have been a better option.

La Salle played a an excellent defensive game. Norman Black was dumbfounded. Aside from Ford Arao, the rest of the Ateneo team just couldn’t contribute. La Salle forced Ateneo to two 24 second violations and two 5 second inbound violations.

La Salle’s other weak point has been foul shooting but today, the team only missed 6 foul shots during the entire game. Ateneo, a good foul shooting team, missed 9 free throws.

La Salle’s offense was horrendous. They took 63 shots and made 22, while Ateneo took 49 shots and made 23. Malabes alone went 3 for 12. He reverted back to the make the shot or air ball player that i thought he had grown out off. He made 1 out of 6 three pointer. La Salle had more attempts but Ateneo made more made shots. It was all about shot selection.

What La Salle did not do was to score off the 24 turnovers that they caused Ateneo to have. This was their 2nd highest turnovers of the season. Tiu, Arao and Escueta had 16 turnovers combined. La Salle had 17 total turnovers, with Pocholo Villanueva getting 6 turnovers to go with his 7 points.

With 5 minutes left, we finally strung up points and build a 7 point lead. But then the curse of the last 2 minutes hits La Salle again.

Why do they rush their offense when they have the lead? Is there no one on the team who knows how to manage a game clock? In 2 minutes there are five 24 second possessions. Is that too hard to determine?

If you look at the stats and do not look at the final score, you wouldn’t believe La Salle lost. Statistically it was one of the worst games of Ateneo. They didn’t beat La Salle, we beat ourselves.

On a final note, to give credit where credit is due, Chris Tiu should be commended for having the guts to take over a game. That’s what separates the good players from the great ones.

I also think Ateneo beat La Salle. Kudos to Chris Tiu for stepping up and carrying the team on his back when it counted the most. I also appreciate Baldos and Barracoso’s contribution.

Another Hail Mary Finish for the Hail Mary Squad!

I hope they win on Sunday. Animo Ateneo. ONE BIG FIGHT.

Si Mr. Green Mind naman,
Ateneo beat Lasalle. Why can’t you admit it? Also, if you look at the stats, Ateneo had a higher shooting percentage, and outrebounded lasalle. Ateneo may have committed more turnovers, but, as you mentioned, lasalle did not convert. Credit Ateneo’s defense also for limiting Lasalle to their LOWEST score of the season–64 points. Mr. Atayde, the stats clearly show that Ateneo beat Lasalle

If i may, Ateneo is the best 2 minute team. If not in the league, then at least against the Archers, and whether we admit it or not, that’s where it really counts. I mean anyone can say just as easily that Ateneo starts well off then screws up halfway through the game. But when it comes down to it, yes when comparing the stats in general they do count a lot but EVERY SINGLE EVENT NO MATTER HOW SMALL COUNTS. Had Baclao made one rebound less, that game could have been probably La Salle’s.

Perhaps in the end, it’s a matter of who wanted it more. But we’ll see you in game 5, and we’ll see who wants to lose to UE more.

bob aquino: never kick someone who’s already down. If you’re from admu, your giving the school a bad rep.

bobo aquino: that has got to be the most irrational arguement i’ve ever heard. The number of board-required courses is not a measure of how good a university is. Students don’t choose university, they choose courses and then select the university on what they think would help them the most (or where they could pass the entrance exam). I bet when you were in high school you asked yourself “what career should I take?” and not “which school should I go to?”. Sorry for the lengthy response but that comment is idiotic at best.

has anyone else noticed jv casio’s suspicious play during crucial games? notice the plays he made in the endgame yesterday… so “uncasioish”. casio is a smart player… however, his bball iq takes a nosedive during endgames… sa cricial games pa… hmmmmm…. also, he’s normally sharp from the charity stripe but during endgames… nerbyos?… maybe… hmmmm….

Its unfair to be suspicious of JV Casio. JV has been serving theLa Salle community splendidly. Im Atenean and bilib ako sakanya. He’s good but he’s human. He’s still a kid too. Do not question his integrity as an athlete just because of his shortcomings. That sounds extremely similar to the whole Cortez bruhaha when La Salle lost the championship to Ateneo. Its no joke playing against your arch rival, playing as much minutes as he did, keeping your composure after Chris Tiu hits a crucial and deadly trey for the third time… Its also the same as saying that Ateneo won the game not because they played hard, but just becasue JV played fishy… Do not be unfair to both the La Salle and Ateneo players. They work their a**es off and with all their hearts Im sure… Ikaw kaya ilagay dun?

In case someone comments on Meirhoffer’s less than usually stellar performance, ngayon pa lang idedefend ko na rin siya (I cant believe Im doing this, hehe). Rico is nursing a hairline fracture in his ankle, result of his bad trip last week. He’s taped up stiff. He was struggling yesterday with his movements but I could see that he was playing as well as he can.

No more excuses please. It really was a horrible game for the Blue Eagles. It just so happened that our King Eagle pulled through. Ganun talaga sa sports, sometimes, breaks of the game lang. Whether its between Ateneo and La Salle or any other team. Ateneo won fair and square last night just as La Salle did last week. Bilog ang mundo, my friends. Focus on Sunday na lang instead of crying over spilled milk. Enjoy naman tayong lahat eh. Okay lang yan guys! =)

Animo Ateneo. Animo La Salle.

To all those who made comments,

Please read my article again. You will se that I mentioned that Ateneo is at its most dangerous in the last 2 minutes. I also mentioned that La Salle is at its worst in the last 2 minutes. At the end of my column, I congratulated Chris Tiu.

The title La Salle Beats La Salle is meant to show that La Salle has not learned from all their last 2 minute losses.

I do not take anything away from Ateneo but speaking from a La Sallian pont of view, which is what this column is all about, then I stand by my point that La Salle is self destructing in the last 2 minutes of their games.

Its was sloppy for both teams. I admire how DLSU’s new way of pressing caused problems for Ateneo. especially during the inbound. Kudos to Franz for that.

Albeit being from ateneo, i think DLSU did beat themselves. When JV got the steal all he had to do was milk the 24 second shot clock it would have been ever. never mind not taking a shot. Of course i’m happy that he did take that ill advised layup:)

Not taking away anything from both teams it was a wonderful game. We’ll have one more nail biter on sunday.

Bobo aquino-I think ECE, at chem lang ang may board exam. Pero the pass rate is something that is something to be admired. Don’t mind the other atenean, maybe he is just a grade school/highschool atenean 🙂

The writer shows us again that La Salle do not know how to accept defeat.

If Ateneo won yesterday, it is because La Salle didn’t score and defend well, AND Ateneo played better in the last 2 minutes, and more importantly, Ateneo scored.

It is not La Salle beats La Salle. The truth is: Ateneo beats La Salle. That’s the fact, and everybody should accept it.

I guess La Salle is having problem here…..why so difficult for them to accept defeat from Ateneo? to think that they have their 3rd defeat from Ateneo this season. I guess what they need is little honesty and sincerity…..

It’s just a game…..both teams still have another game to play…..whoever will win, we should just enjoy the game….

Honesty through Sports…that’s the Theme of UAAP Season 70

I think what The Green and Blue Mind wants to say is that Good Losers know how to take defeat without having to give reasons why they lost. It was a matter of who scored more points and in the end Ateneo won.

Sore losers come up with all sorts of reasons like game fixing, injuries, fatigue, etc…

Hats off to Ateneo, they extended the series till Sunday. Ateneo really beat La Salle, the Eagles deserve to win this one. They hang in the game even when the Archers were quite in control.

I think game 3 will be decided the way it is suppose to be- close and dramatic. I just hope JV Casio (another Pakwan, Green on the outside but Red in the inside) will lead the archers to victory.

In my view, a win by 1 point and getting ahead only within the last minute of the game is not a convincing win. But I agree, Ateneo still won. But winning in those circumstances can be attributed to other factors. And that was what the article was all about.

The other factors include La Salle always playing lousily in the last 2 minutes of a game.

Boy Pakwan, ako hats off din ako sa Ateneo for having the resolve to win this game. Hindi sila nag breakdown. Not only are they good in basketball, they are also bright people. (So please ignore my last sentence in my previous post.)

Same thing I can say for other schools. Except for some people who claim to represent their school but instead are doing their school some injustice.

Ang hirap lang sa iba dito is they want to paint a picture of La Salle as sore losers because of this article. Eh kung marunong ba ang isa magbasa, alam naman niya na hindi naman ganito ang ipinahihiwatig ng artikulo.

Eh kami naman mga Lasallians, losing games does not take away our greatness. We are, and always be, the best and the brightest.

Lasallista, I think you should already change your pen name to LaSallian, we have drop off the ISTA in the late 70’s to show that we were moulded by the Christian Brothers.

Just believe in our team, adversity brings character out of people.

Oh come on Tony!

You think by attributing two lines to Chris Tiu at the end of your article, it gives it balance?

Knocking Jinggoy? Helllooo… Ilad? Salgado? PEP Test? Cardel? Allado studying in Benilde? Locsin? Did you read the papers yesterday and the news about Neri’s expose on your team’s padrino Razon? And the list goes on…

Don’t even dare to start about how “great” you are.

Character is decidedly the missing ingredient in your players, because their coaches and managers don’t have it either.

as an atenean, i find nothing wrong with this atayde article (never thought I’d ever agree with him on anything). I get his point and I don’t think he is sourgraping nor putting down ateneo.
The title “la salle beats la salle”…it’s rather dramatic but hey, he is a la sallian writing from a la sallian’s point of view.
fact is, we were greatly helped by some rather questionable plays by la salle in the final 2 minutes.
nevertheless, we made the shots when we had to and a win by 1 point is still a win.

Let us grant that the writer – as he so explained – wrote this article from the point of view of a La Sallite. That is how he saw things.

But that really is also the main point going against his article.

Think about it. Was there ever any La Salle loss to Ateneo that came without an excuse from the La Sallites?

The 2002 championship defeat at the hands of the Eagles? It was because of their very own star Cortez allegedly throwing the game.

The first Ateneo-La Salle game this season? Ateneo cheated by fielding two foreign players at the same time.

The second Eagles-Archers game? There was still time in the game clock and La Salle was cheated out of a victory by the referees.

And now this.

Come on Tony. The better team won yesterday, plain and simple.

Dear Ateneo Faithful,

Yesterday, our starters and shock troopers snatched still another thrilling victory from the green jaws of defeat. This, despite the enemy’s pressure defense and true-to-form play of veteran TY Tang . . . aided and abetted by the spotty officiating. T’was truly a testament to our Blue Eagles’ big fighting hearts, our coaching staff’s bang-on plays, rotation and substitution patterns, our entire Blue Babble Battalion’s unceasing outcry, and above all, our Lord’s grace and empowerment.

The sobriety and sportsmanship that players, coaches and fans demonstrated all throughout, in the midst of such intense, nerve-wracking hostilities, are also very gratifying.

We need those ingredients again this weekend . . . in spades.

Firstly, for our SBP and Passerelle teams as they face LSGH and Xavier School, respectively, in the MILO-BEST NCR Finals on Sunday at the Jacinto Tiu Gym of Xavier School. Game times are 10:45am and 9:00am, respectively.

Secondly, our Lady Eagles tomorrow seek their second straight win and the championship over the Lady Maroons. Game time is at 2pm, Ninoy Aquino Stadium. Immediately following is game 2 of the Jrs. Finals, where our Blue Eaglets strive to draw level with DLSU-Zobel.

And of course, on Sunday, our Blue Eagles meet DLSU for the fifth time this season, with the second and last Finals berth at stake. This promises to be another epic showdown, the penultimate leg in our gallant team’s journey to the championship.

Ateneo Basketball is alive and well! But our boys, young men and women cannot and should not do it alone. Let’s lift them up in prayer and will them on to victory in neo-classical Ateneo fashion: by coming to the games in full force, lustily singing and shouting out our new and traditional anthems and cheers, clapping to the infectious and inspiring eight beat, and being on our passionate best behavior.

May our players take it to the next level in the spirit of MAGIS . . . more physical, mental, emotional and spiritual excellence!

Im truly flattered that you write a message to the Ateneo community in my column.

Mr.Atayde,

I think that post was from the email blast sent to the Ateneo alumni. Mukhang cut-and-paste. But regardless, I commend all the efforts of Ateneo and La Salle in responding the “call to avoid hooliganism”… THe letter Bro.Oca sent out circulated here in our office as well. Very admirable. Kudos!

Come on guys! It was a fair article. It’s not like Mr Atayde bashed Ateneo. I think he even bashed la salle! It was a really great game. I had fun at NSG and even exchanged high-fives with all the la sallians surrounding our table (we were outnumbered 5 to1 i think) Good thing we won! Hehe! If we lost, some of us might say we also beat ourselves by those #*@!!X! turnovers and even having baracosso on the court during the final seconds.

Mr A, does this mean no more Green Mind next season? The line up of both our schools will be much more competitive next year pa naman! Sayang! I think it will be an AdMU vs DLSU finals next year. You articles seem to help the rivalry alive! Anyway good luck on sunday! May the best team win!

ONE BIG FIGHT!!!

im really disappointed that most of the comments here are really immature considering a huge number came from ateneo. it seems most didnt understand the point of mr. atayde’s article even when it was written in simple english.

and bob aquino, are you really from ateneo? youre a big disgrace. it’s either that or youre in grade 7 and acting your age.

The Green Mind

Blue Ice,

The Green Mind will definitely be back. Who knows, there just might be an Atenean counterpart next season. That would be really fun. I am hoping that all the participating schools in the NCAA and the UAAP will have writer on this site. Unlike PEX or ubelt.com, this site is not a forum but rather a site where writers who have a passion for the game take timeout to put their thoughts to paper and take a stand, regardless of the popularity of their opinions. The people of inboundpass.com, Mike Abasolo, Kim Lesaca, Charlie Cuna, Josef Ramos and Roge Dublin do this for the love of the game. I am priveleged to be apart of this group.

i have to agree with mr atayde. not that i am discrediting the efforts of ateneo. they did hell of a job defensively. and chris tiu just wouldn’t die. what a heart! he definitely willed to win this game. but la salle did shot themeselves in the foot on this one. i think they even had a chance to win if they held the ball til the 24 sec shot clock ran out. but the problem is, there was no timeout made (i think there was not even a chance to call one) and so setting up a decent play wasn’t done. and this is where maturity sets in. the vets should have made that call. i’m equally surprised that casio had to made that difficult shot when they were up by 3. like what many have commented, ateneo executes well in the end game, and la salle knows that. which is why many la sallites want a comfortable lead going into the dying seconds. but personally, i thought 6 pts was comfortable enough in the last 2 minutes.

but that game is over. i’m sure the vets will charge this to experience, albeit a painful one. but there’s still sunday. and expect both teams to make the necessary adjustments. and in the end, the team that has the heart and the desire will win it.

win or lose, it’s the school i choose!

28 09 2007
The Green Mind

Gone from La Salle will be Pocholo Villanueva and TY Tang. I’m not sure about Walsham. Rico has 2 more years and Casio 1 more.

Watch out for Ferdinand next season. He is one hard working player who will be a force to reckon with. A healthy Batricevic is also a player to watch. He plays European style basketball which is based on proper fundamentals.

How I wish that a true national collegiate tournament be initiated where the best collegiate teams in the country meet with their best players to decide who is really the no. 1 school in basketball.

28 09 2007

Speaking of Cholo Villanueva… according to Ubelt.com, he’s been playing for DLSU since 2001. I’m just curious, what is his 7-year course?

We all know La Salle lost to Ateneo. But what’s so hard to understand in the statement “La Salle beats La Salle.” Maybe you can try to not see things literally then you can understand what the article meant.

We’re not making excuses. Ateneo won fair and square. Sad to say, it was Ateneo who wanted it more in the closing minutes of the game and not La Salle. When La Salle lost to UST in the Second Round sabi ko ‘ok na din yun, at least may natutunan tayo dun.’ Obviously, wala din pala. We didn’t learn from our mistakes, and that’s sad. I do hope this time we learned from it na hehe.ü

Ahhh, wala pong 7-year course sa La Salle.ü hehe!

Anyway, tanggap ko po na talo ang La Salle. Hindi po ako sore loser na hindi makatanggap ng pagkatalo. Masakit nga lang sa puso hehe! If only our team played better in the last two minutes of the game than they did, we could have won siguro.ü O baka masamain nyo din yan!ö

Keep the Faith!

@bobo aquino – hmmm… not really sure now. AFAIK, they’ve been split into several schools which might have opened new courses with board requirements although I’m pretty sure there’s ECE (a new course offering on my senior year back in 2000).

@bob aquino – seriously, get off your high horse

Great article man. I would probably feel the same way if things happened the other way around (i’m from admu). It wasn’t a convincing win, but a resilient one. If anything that only gives the Blue a slight mental advantage coming into sunday’s game. Its Pumaren’s job to make his players stop kicking themselves that they had that one in the bag.

I’m also a little suspicious about Casio’s decision making. I hope its just his nerves and not some mobsters trying to ‘manipulate’ the spread of this games.

Btw, who’s going to take over PG for dlsu next year? Maierhofer’s going to dominate for sure. 2 more years for Ferdinand.

bobo aquino,
upcat is nothing. I passed upcat. Went to ateneo because it is the best school. You didn’t take acet because you know deep down you won’t be able to pass it that is why you went to lasalle. What a lame reason that you choose a school because your house is nearer. Talk about decision making.

29 09 2007
donnie_darko

To all Ateneans reading this article and who might’ve misread it, what Mr. Atayde is trying to say is that the players themselves of La Salle gave the team the loss, hence the title “La Salle beats La Salle.” For the record, I am a La Sallian, and i fully agree on what is said in this article. Overall, the Green Archers played a great game. If you would look at the stats, they outplayed the Blue Eagles in terms of field goals. La Salle even did better in their free throw shooting. It was really in those dying seconds of the game that La Salle fumbled. Sana wag natin bigyan ng masamang meaning yung title na “La Salle beats La Salle.” Read the article first before making any comments.

And another thing. I’ve noticed that the La Salle-Ateneo rivalry this year has become more…uncivilized. Hindi na nga tamang archrivals tawagin sa isa’t isa e. Mas bagay na ang enemies. I mean, come on guys. This is just basketball. This should be the venue for us to uphold the spirit of camaraderie in sports. Ok lang magpagalingan pero yung magbastusan, hindi na ata tama yun. Yung wrong spelling and suspended cheers done by the blue crowd, i don’t think that is uncalled for. Well, you might say that we La Sallians are also guilty of such classless acts, and I admit that we are. Pero sana di na natin palalain pa. May mali na nga kami, ginaya nyo pa. But what the hell, lahat tayo nagkamali. La Sallians, siguro parang karma na natin to dahil kahit aminin natin o hindi, naging foul din mga hirit natin pag games. Again this is not ass kissing to Ateneans or anything on my part. I’m just pointing out where we went wrong. But on the other hand, Ateneans shouldn’t be acting the way they are as well.

What am I driving at here? Like I mentioned earlier, I was hoping that the beef between these two schools, especially this season would mellow down a bit and sana hindi makalimutan na basketball lang to and we should uphold the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship.

And everyone, before you make comments, please read this post carefully first. Goodluck to both teams on Sunday. May the better team win. ANIMO LA SALLE!

darko,

while i laud your efforts and fully agree with you, things are not yet as bad as they can be. kasi may next level pa which would be rumbles after games like in the 70s or early 80s. plus mga basagan ng car windshields w/ school stickers of opposing schools.

mukhang that wont happen soon because the youth of today from ateneo and lasalle are all chickenshit. so maangas lang sila dito sa net forums or in the coliseum while yung nginangatngatan (dirty finger) nila eh a hundred meters away. 😀

29 09 2007
donnie_darko

bewildered, oo nga e. talk about chicken shit. hehehe kaya nga mas ok if we just leave the dirty stuff to the oldies (no offense to the elders. hehe) and let us young ones just enjoy the game na may konting asaran. Kinda like the ready to rumble episode on NU 107. Halikinu radio and Green Archer Radio.

29 09 2007
Spectator

I am an Atenean and I agree with Mr.Atayde and Donnie Darko. I was not able to watch the game live, I just heard on the radio on my way home from work that Ateneo won, but i did not get any details. So I was able to watch the replay with a clear mind.

As I watched the replay that night, up to the last two minutes, I seriously wondered if I might have heard wrong. How could a team win with so many turnovers. Was this another NU game ? La Salle up by 6 with two minutes left, Ty Tang waxing hot, Chris Tiu stone cold. Ateneo win ?

This is why college basketball is so exciting. All of us become students once again, wearing our Blue and Green. At the end of the day, it really does not matter who wins, but what matters is that both teams have reminded us once again, by its actions, what it means to be a Green Archer and what it means to be a Blue Eagle. Kudos to both teams for giving us the most exciting UAAP season ever.

donnie, when you said “i don’t think that is uncalled for” you meant it’s okay? just clarifying because personally, i think that is just part of the asaran. i don’t understand why we’re so sensitive about it really and make it a measure of “dignity” and “class”. maybe if they still chant it next year e medyo di na siguro maganda at luma na. i just hope we don’t slip into something again and give them a new banner.

what i don’t understand though is all this boo-ing we are doing. since when did boo become part of our cheers? i understand the boo-ing to distract the free throw shooters but then mag-cheer ang kalaban, mag-boo-boo tayo. magcha-chant ang kalabang, mag-boo-boo tayo. why can’t we just cheer?

Ateneo beats La Salle, period.
Mr. Green Mind, I respect what you’re saying but please don’t be bias. ATeneo won because they got the skills. If it was luck, then you have to maximize that luck. Without skills, luck is practically useless.

29 09 2007
Pikon Talo

I passed the ACET and UPCAT. Never took the La Salle Exam because it was never an option. I chose to go to Ateneo because I believed it had a more well-rounded education with Theology and Philosophy as part of the core curriculum.

Just a comment on the earlier posts….. since when having a PRC card make one superior to others? Passing a board exam merely validates your competence to perform services you had so worked hard to learn and master, and more importantly to protect the general public.

By the way, I don’t have a PRC Card but I do have a certificate from the Supreme Court . Its a license to practice law and serve the public. Like a PRC Card, it does not give me the license to feel superior to others.

P.S. Why dont we try listing down licenses issued by the PRC…. I will start, for: Midwives, Librarians (I’m not sure about this), Doctors, Nurses. What else?

The Blue Marc,

I sound like a broken record already but I AM BIASED and I do not and will not apologize for this. The name of my column is THE GREEN MIND..green as in La Salle. I was asked to write in this website as a Lasallian I dont get paid to write here but do so because of passion for my school and most of all the game of college basketball. If you want an objective look at the game go read a newspaper. But if you read and most of all understood my article, I did not bash Ateneo buyt rather heavily criticized La Salle’s lack of an end game, even calling La Salle “the best 38 minute team in the league”.

If you expect me to write raving reviews about Ateneo then you can wait until you grow white hair under your armpits and you still wont see that happen.

29 09 2007

To the Ateneans,

I was just wondering why the Ateneo Alma Mater Hymn has the exact melody of the Canadian National Anthem?

err… la salle, best 38 minute team in the league?

WHAT ABOUT U.E.?

not only are they the best 38 minute team, they’re the best 2 minute team, the best 40 minute team… the best TEAM period.

let’s give them credit, please.

and as for lasallians being sore losers… you’re right. you have every right to PROTEST being labeled as such. really. 🙂

This is what I could find on Wiki. If this doesn’t satisfy your curiosity, we’ll try to get a statement from Fr. Reuter.

Before the Ateneo de Manila moved to Loyola Heights, the school anthem was “Hail Ateneo, Hail,” a marching tune. When the Ateneo moved from Padre Faura to Loyola Heights in the 1950s, the school adopted “A Song for Mary” as its graduation hymn. Fr. James Reuter wrote the lyrics, and Ateneo band moderator Captain Jose Campana composed the melody, adapted from the 1880 composition of Calixa Lavallée’s hymn “O Canada,” which has been a Canadian patriotic hymn since the 1880s and eventually became Canada’s official national anthem in 1980. Over the decades, the graduation hymn eventually supplanted “Hail Ateneo, Hail” and is now widely considered the Ateneo de Manila’s alma mater song.

29 09 2007
The Green Mind

It has absolutely no difference from the Canadian Natinal Anthem. Bssed on what you wrote, do you mean that it was Canada who copied the Ateneo Alma Mater Hymn?

questions that have been bugging me all these years:

1.)why do people see la salle as stupid? is it because it has become a diploma factory? is it because it will have more branches/ outlets than jollibee by 2010? or simply, they are just plain stupid.

And what’s the point of bringing up the issue about ADMU’s Song for Mary having the same tune with O Canada? Lahat ng musikero may pinagbabasehan ng music. Orange and Lemons, binase sa The Care ung theme song ng PBB, ung Radioactive Sago Project, ginaya sa bandang Liquid Soul (the song is Salt Peanut/Chocolate Covered Nut) ung kanta nilang Gin Pomelo. The list goes on.

THIS, my dear paquito diaz, is why we ateneans think lasallians are stupid.

Did you not read the pasted part?

“..adapted from the 1880 composition of Calixa Lavallée’s hymn “O Canada,” which has been a Canadian patriotic hymn since the 1880s..”

is your reading comprehension that terrible, that you did not understand that the Canadian national anthem was written first? We never claimed that the melody of our alma mater song was original. In fact, it is utterly irrelevant to… well… anything.

Bo, la salle, bo-bo lasalle!

29 09 2007
The Green Mind

The chronology as written by kostkakod was that the song was composed in 1880, then 1n the 1950s, Fr, Reuter wrote lyrics and Capt. Campana adapted the melody and in 1980 it became the official National Anthem of Canada.

So what does that chronology tell you? It shows that Ateneo used the melody first before it became the Canadian National Anthem.
