Tiu saved the day, Ateneo lives another day

27 09 2007

WHEN the Blue Eagles were in a brink of getting eliminated last September 27, 2007, Chris Tiu came in at the right place and at the right time to save them.

Tiu delivered a go-ahead lay-up for Ateneo De Manila University with only seven seconds left to hack-out a 65-64 squeaker over De La Salle University and force a rubber match for the last Finals seat in the 70th UAAP Senior Men’s basketball at the Araneta Coliseum.

Down by 58-64 in the last two minutes and 10 seconds, the Blue Eagles went immediately to Tiu who hit an important triple at the 1:59 minute mark, and then, Clifford Arao nailed a crucial basket to slice the deficit to 63-64 just 51 seconds to go.

La Salle succumbed to a turnover in the ensuing play, allowing Ateneo to set up a play for Tiu. The first attempt of the 6-foot guard came up short with 15 seconds left, but Kirk Long grabbed the offensive rebound to go for another play.

This time, Tiu didn’t disappoint the overwhelming Ateneo crowd.

“I have a great feeling that we can still win and extend the series even if we’re down in the last two-minute mark,” said Tiu, who racked up seven of his 14 points in the final period with four assists. “There’s no other way but to attack and I’m happy I made it.”

Ateneo Blue Eagles Coach Norman Black Post Game Interview:

With the important victory, Ateneo forced La Salle in a knock-out game on September 30 for the last Finals berth. The winner will meet unbeaten University of the East in a Best-of-Three Finals.

The Green Archers, armed with a twice-to-beat advantage against the Blue Eagles, were leading most of the way, particularly in the last quarter.

After a 37-all deadlock, La Salle dropped a scorching 10-4 attack courtesy of veterans TY Tang and Joseph Casio to build up a 49-43 lead with 1:49 minutes to go in third period.

The Green Archers had a 54-48 lead early in the 4th period, but the Blue Eagles were able to tie it, 54-all, after Severino Baclao’s back-to-back baskets with 6:01 minutes left.

De La Salle, still, had the advantage until the middle of the fourth quarter, leading by 5-points. But Ateneo pulled the game within striking distance thru the efforts of Baclao and Tiu.

“The bottom line is Chris Tiu struggled most of the time, but he didn’t quit and he made the winning shot,” said Ateneo coach Norman Black. “It’s a tough game and we are expecting La Salle to come out tougher on Sunday.”

La Salle was ahead by 16-15 in the first quarter and 31-30 at halftime. The Green Archers also outscored the Blue Eagles in the third quarter, 21-17. Ateneo came up strong in the pivotal fourth quarter to outscore them, 18-12.

Center Clifford Arao paced Ateneo with 19 points on a 7-of-14 shooting from the field. While guard Eric Salamat and Severino Baclao added 8-points. Baclao had a game-high nine rebounds.

The game had 14 lead changes. Ateneo registered 23-out-of-49 (46.9%) from the field against La Salle’s 22-out-of-63 (34.9%). The Blue Eagles also out-rebounded the Green Archers, 41-29. Tyrone Tang led La Salle with 20 points and Joseph Casio had 11-points

“We just need to be aware of this loss and we can’t allow additional turnovers,” said Franz Pumaren, the Green Archers coach, said. “Our defense became weak in the last part and Ateneo took advantage.”

Pumaren said the Green Archers will do everything they can to beat Ateneo on September 30 to advance.

Individual scores:

Ateneo 65: Arao 19, Tiu 14, Baclao 8, Salamat 8, Al-Hussaini 5, Baldos 4, Barracoso 4, Long 3, Austria 0, Escueta 0, Reyes 0.

La Salle 64: Tang 20, Casio 11, Malabes 7, Maierhofer 7, Villanueva 7, Cua 7, Walsham 7, Atkins 0, Ferdinand 0, Co 0, Barua 0.

Quarters scores: 15-16, 30-31, 47-52, 65-64

Ateneo, once again, found some miraculous way to win. Bench players such as Escueta, Baldos, and Barracoso(in this particular occasion) made the most out of their limited minutes to contribute to the team. I hope this gives them more confidence and encourages the other players to do the same in the succeeding games. In the end, the Ateneo’s collaborative effort put the team in the position for another great finish in this game.

Special mention to King Eagles: Ford Arao and Chris Tiu for their courage and leadership. “Big time players make big time plays!”

Give it your all on Sunday. Animo Ateneo. ONE BIG FIGHT!!!

De La Salle University-Manila is the top private university in the country. In fact, De La Salle is at 392nd among the world’s best university. Sad to say that Ateneo is only at 484th.
There’s nothing you can do.La Salle is better than you!! This is a fact and you can never argue with it.
Another is UST. Asa kayo. Kayo pinaka last. Lol!
Hindi bobo mga lasalista!

Hindi porke top ranked ang school it automatically means ang students ay top ranked na rin. You tend to generalize just for the sake of having an argument. Puro lang kayo salita, while all of you are just boasting out of your pride. Karamihan pa sa inyo mga bobo. Hindi pa kayo marunong tumanggap ng pagkatalo.

Aanhin mu ang “392nd rank” ng DLSU as “world’s best university”, malalagay mu ba sa CV mo yan at maipepresent mo sa mga companies when you apply work for them? Or even put it in your ID and present it at shops to avail a discount?

This was funny when I read it. I believe this may come as a shock to you pero tapos na yung ADMU-UST knockout with Ateneo coming out on top. FYI. Ateneo also won the its first playoff game with La Salle. The final game is of the series is on Sunday. If the previous games give us any indication, I think this will be the game that defines season 70. I pray Ateneo comes out on top again.

obviously DLSU was shocked by the defeat. but they will definitely come out strong on sunday. si franz pa, he’ll make the adjustments. but ateneo will also do their part. so many TOs, but i credit those to DLSU’s defense. coach norman will study the tapes and devise something. i think ateneo will adjust as well.

but the key is having the heart to win it. ateneo has proved this time and time again. people say tsamba lang, or it’s a fluke. no matter how narrow the margin is, a win is a win. and doing it 3x, all by the same person, i don’t see this as a fluke. ateneo executes its plays in the end game. even the DLSU coaching staff acknowledges that.

i just expect ateneo to go all out on sunday. win or lose, basta may puso maglaro, i’m ok with that. go ateneo!

Sobrang ganda nung laro grabe. FYI, I’m not from Ateneo nor La Salle, but i was really thrilled to have watched the game. I’m in fact a UP student but due to our misfortune this season (0-14), I was left without a school to cheer for. Eh yung kaibigan ko na nagyaya sakin manood ng game eh Atensita, nag cheer na rin ako para sa Ateneo. Galing naman ng parehong kupunan pero bilib ako sa Ateneo. Go Ateneo! One Big Fight! At dun sa nagsabi na 392nd ang La Salle sa worlds best universities, ang UP parin ang topnotch, ehem*299th*ehem. hehe Beat that!!

“Here comes the win at all costs mentality again!”

La Salle scholars (is there such a thing?) are now reading the UAAP rulebook, to look for a loophole (god forbid na mahuli nanaman sila) that would allow them to enroll Zandro Limpot and the Lago brothers in school to have them play on Sunday. hahaha!

– huh? nobody argues with you on this. Besides, we don’t have to know where we are on the list of Top Universities here or even in the whole world. Does it matter at all? And I don’t think we should give a damn! It’s just nothing but a plain recognition. If you are to get a job you don’t write in your resume as “I am from La Salle- part of the big 4- most prestigious school in the land- 392nd among the top universities in the world”, do you do that? NO! That’s a big crap! I don’t understand why most of us have to specify that we belong to a prestigious school and others are not, then they’re dumb? silly syllogism! well.. it makes yourself dumb for that matter! and it doesn’t makes sense at all!

so for you sususus.. just think about it! ANIMO LA SALLE? ANIMO ATENEO? I don’t even think you’re one of them! Well.. Dream On!
