Ateneo Beats Ateneo

29 09 2007

Yes you read the title of my article right. The shoe was on the other foot as the Ateneo Blue Eaglets squandered a 6 point lead with 2 minutes to go in regulation as La Salle tied it with a 3 pointer with 5 seconds left and send the game into overtime.

Ateneo looked ready to send the series into a rubber match with 24 seconds to go and still leading 3. La Salle fouled and Ateneo scored both free throws. La Salle hit a 2 with 12 seconds left and immediately fouled and Ateneo hit 1 of 2. La Salle brought the ball down and a perfect play was made to give Manguera an open 3.

In the overtime period, La Salle’s Joshua Webb and Brian Manguera took over to give La Salle Zobel the victory and the championship via a 2 game sweep of the first place Blue Eaglets.

Composure, game clock management and most of all the desire to win was very evident in every player on the La Salle Zobel team.

The Seniors Basketball Team should watch that game and maybe pick up a few things on what they will need to beat the Blue Eagles on Sunday. Whether they win or not, the future looks good for the Green Archers.

La Salle Zobel coach Boris Aldeguer said “we were not given the chance to defend the title last year and we had something to prove this year”. The 2005 champions had lost graduates Migs de Asis, Simon Atkins and Martin Reyes.

All eyes are now on the awesome Joshua Webb, son of Lasallian Fritz Webb and grandson of the original spitfire Freddie Webb. He would be a great addition to a La Salle seniors’ team and play alongside Rico Maierhofer. Today, he had 21 rebounds as well as 2 crucial offensive board in the end game that led to a tip in plus a foul. The kid is just what La Salle needs.

Brian Manguera, son of former La Salle player and now Vice Mayor of Lipa, Boy Maguera, is another player that is worth looking into along with Capacio and Fortuna, who looks like a JV Casio in the making.

Congratulations to the De La Salle Zobel Junior Basketball Team for a great season and most of all for the championship.

Jazz Man

Kim Waters has a nice rendition of this song. He had some nice sax work there.
