Will The Icing Follow?

4 10 2007

It was a festive day of green and red at the Araneta Coliseum. As the crowds were starting to come, it felt different from the energy that was present in last Sunday’s La Salle – Ateneo game. There was excitement from the La Salle crowd because it is the Finals but it didn’t have the tension that was in everyone’s faces in the last game.

The UE fans on the other hand were eager to get the game started. They had been waiting for 20 days and their wait was compounded by the high intensity level of the last 2 La Salle – Ateneo games. After all, they did win 14 straight games to automatically capture the 1st Finals berth but this seemed overshadowed by the playoff games for that 2nd seat.

During the warm-ups, I noticed that the UE Red Warriors were focused, maybe too focused or what we call “gigil”. The Green Archers on the other hand looked more relaxed having just played 2 back to back thrillers.

Finally, the jump ball and Game 1 of the Finals was on its way.

Both teams looked tight early and it was immediately obvious that both teams were mirroring their defense. But with UE dominating the boards on both ends of the floor, they did not look like they skipped a beat.

UE ends the first quarter with a 45% field goal shooting while La Salle could only make 5 of 16 from the field.. With the 1st quarter score at 20 – 14 for UE, the La Salle fans seemed restless but still in high spirits.

The 2nd quarter was an all together different story. La Salle clamped down on its defense and also began getting hot. The Red Warriors seemed confused and with still 8 minutes to go, Coach Dindo Pumaren had already used up all his timeouts.

La Salle erases the UE 8 point lead by forcing forces more turnovers. The game starts to get physical, which would definitely be to UE’s advantage because of their size. UE just totally dominates the rebounds.

Sloppy offense on both sides keeps the scoring low, which would benefit La Salle because the Green Archers were playing slow deliberated basketball while the Red Warriors were running.

The first half ends at 39 – 37 for UE and the La Salle crowd was wondering, is it possible?

A look at some stats from the first half makes this game even more confusing. Though scoring percentages were almost equal, UE outrebounded La Salle 34 to 13. La Salle however caused UE to commit 12 turnovers while committing only 5 and had more blocks than their taller opponents.

The 3rd quarter saw both teams shooting terrible. Neither team could build a substantial lead but again this was definitely an advantage for La Salle. It was actually starting to be a coach’s match. Continuous substitution from both sides just kept coming.

The quarter ends with UE shooting 3 of 11 while La Salle 4 of 20. The jitters of the Finals were very evident. With UE still on top 50 – 47, the match was definitely anyone’s to take.

The 4th quarter belonged to TY Tang. He just lit up the scoreboard and kept La Salle in the game. Playing alongside veterans Pocholo Villanueva, Rico Maierhofer and JV Casio, the Green Archers began showing what Conach Dindo Pumaren feared most, the championship experience of La Salle. Surprisingly, it was the rookie Ferdinand that stood his ground against the UE big men.

Coach Franz, knew exactly what he had to do and kept his younger brother reacting to his moves. La Salle showed the composure that had vanished many times in the past games. UE on the other hand seemed lost.

With less than a minute to go, La Salle takes a 3 point lead. But UE’s Mark Borboran hits a 3 and ties the game. Rico Maierhofer gets fouled and splits his charities. With La Salle up by 1 and less than 20 seconds to go, UE goes for the final shot. La Salle makes one last defensive stand and UE just can’t find a way to score. Malabes gets the final rebound of the game and La Salle gets the win.

As the La Salle crowd was in jubilation, the UE players looked shocked. Their first loss of the season happens at the worst time. They are not invincible after all.

I felt that the deep bench of Coach Dindo backfired on him today. He has so much talent on that team but did not seem to have the core group he needed for today. Maybe substitutions were made too fast, so much so that the players were not able to get into the groove at the end game.

Oh the end game, how important is that? It was La Salle’s weakness that they have now transformed into their strength.

Can the UE Red Warriors come back from this devastating loss? They have never had that this year and it will be a test of their character to do so. Will the Green Archers go for the jugular on Sunday? They better, because a 3rd game will be an advantage for UE.

We got the cake when we beat Ateneo. Will the icing follow?

Congrats LaSalle.

First!

My heart roots for the underdog (unfortunately for moi, its La Salle). My mind goes for UE (“the lesser evil”).

OBF!

To Mr. Atayde:
I definitely agree with you… I was there earlier this day for the first game of the FINALS as I was during the Ateneo and La Salle games… The energy was “DIFFERENT” the intensity of excitement was low… i’m not saying this because of the UE 14-0 record (which is now 14-1 and hoping to be 14-2 pa!) but may be i’m still looking for the Ateneo – La Salle rivalry…

It just didn’t feel like the Finals “anymore” IN “my own” opinion people of the Philippines have seen the FINALS ALREADY (five times pa nga eh) between the Ateneo and La Salle! and to UE (no hard feelings to the UE fans but maybe MOST of the Lasallians including myself is now just UP TO THE TITLE (literally the TITLE nalang) 🙂 this might sounds odd but i miss the crowd of atenista! i hope to see you guys again next season in the FINALS! 🙂

and… we really had fun watching the game 1 and we’re expecting MORE sa game 2! to my beloved team— keep it up! we’re here to support you! ANIMO LA SALLE!

NEWSFLASH: “WARRIORS GOT AXED IN GAME 1″,
so asan na mga crtics?bout peeps from the other site predicting 16-0?ano ba spread ng game?i’m sure heavily favored ang Warriors. THIS GAME GOES OUT to all the non-believers.
great game. WORTH IT ANG PUYAT, NOW IM SLEEPY AT WORK, just waiting for the critics to serve as my morning cup of joe:)
MR. ATAYDE, Good morning po(los angeles time), ganda ng gising ng mga lasalista dito, one sunny “BLUE SKY”, and the grass are “GREENER” today. Big props to the coaching staff, I salute your program, imagine our team running and pressing back and forth, galing ng condition ng mga players.ONE MORE WIN, we will try it again. Siguradong UE will bounce back with a vengeance, the only great thing now is that we know that they are beatable, at least no more “16-0″, we already tainted their record, and had our small piece of the pie.
We thank GOD also for this win, if it’s your will that we will take the crown so be it, if not, we thank you for this SEASON.
REKTIKANO!!

opinion ko lang ito. i think playing against UE is just as exciting, if not more, as against Ateneo. UE has a much better basketball team than Ateneo. this is what we are after now, to prove to all that we have the best basketball team.

we have already proven that La Salle is better than Ateneo in academics.

not to mention that UE has produced more graduates who are much better in their respective fields than ateneo has.

Watched the game in Araneta yesterday…I agree that it was not as intense as the past games with Ateneo but it was a very good and exciting game nonetheless. Congratulations to the Archers and also to the Warriors who put up a good fight.

Til the next game! I sure do hope the icing will follow =) Animo La Salle!!!

“Oh the end game, how important is that? It was La Salle’s weakness that they have now transformed into their strength.”

If Boboran’s 3-pointer or Arellano’s put back in the last seconds had gone in, I’m afraid the write-up would have been, “the end game… it continues to be La Salle’s weakness.”

But it was not meant to be. This time “UE defeats UE.” That is not to take away credit from DLSU’s great defense, teamwork, and superb coaching from Franz.

Animo La Salle! Sweep.

I was not expecting La Salle to win because let’s face it, UE has a deep bench. But boy! redemption feels so good! Mr. Atayde was right when he said that we got the cake when we won against Ateneo. You know I have only pure admiration for Rico Maierhofer…he was obviously in pain and he was limping while playing against UE but he still tried his best to help the team…Thiele tried to worsen Maierhofer’s condition by stucking his bony legs under Rico Maierhofer’s feet while Rico was making a shot. Thiele should have been slapped with technical for that.

To Thiele, bagay yung mukha mo sa ugali mo ha! Bad ka!

I am surprised that again, people are saying that the refs’ calls were biased. Can’t someone think of a better excuse than to always blame the referees. UE shot more free throws than La Salle. They both committed 21 fouls in the game in spite of UE being bigger than La Salle.

ue did also commit 28 turnovers during their 2nd game against lasalle. so the 31 turonvers cannot only be due to rust. rust is usually evident in the first quarter pero ue shoot it off. they did dominate ng rebounding by roughly aroung 20 more, so thats why the game is still so close even with the 31 turnovers. it only goes to show that lasalle is very capable of beating ue.

how many points did gregorio scored? parang 0 ata.. to me he seems to have pulled a custodio. did he even shot a fieldgoal? parang hindi talaga siya evident like he used to in past ue games.

Calls were tight as always. NABRO kasi yung mga refs can’t count on them to be reliable. I don’t see it favorable for any team. It was a good game. I have to commend Tang and Cholo for playing great games. they were absent most of the season but on the brink of elimination they bring out their A games. Casio played as he normally does, nothing exceptional. Ferdinand also probably payed his best season. Kudos to dlsu they proved they are really hungry for the crown.

Albeit being from Ateneo I was cheering for DLSU. since this season has already been memorable why not make it more interesting.
a. 5 admu dlsu games
b. 2>3 wins
c. 5 teams fighting for slots 2-3.
d. sweeping the eliminations but losing the crown

Can’t get any better than this season 🙂

No Archer suffered from cramps = Not physically tired
Archer Defense never wavered = Not emotionally drained
Coach Franz was ready and focused = Not mentally fatigued
Archer veterans guards led and delivered = Confidence!!
Plus you have a healthy true MVP playing in Rico,

How can the Archers loose?

UE do have the capability to win 2 straight games but they lack endgame poise and no court leadership was felt. Unlike the Committee Leadership of Tang, Villanueva and Casio, which most of the time is by exmple.

I hope the Archers can end it on Sunday that I don’t need to absent myself from work if we go into game. But again I don’t mind that. It may again be UE 3 vs La Salle 2, but La Salle still wins the Championship.

Truly, at times 2 is better than 3.

Boy Pakwan,

Isn’t Rico still nursing an injury? I’m just worried that he might aggravate it and it may have lifetime hampering effects.

The Green Mind,
Can you confirm if Rico is 100%?

5 10 2007
The Green Mind

Rico is nursing a sver sprain, which happened in a game against Ateneo. He was in a cast for 5 days to immobilize the ankle. It is heavily taped and that is why he is having ahard time taking a foul shot cos he cant put weight on it to push off.

JV Casio is also nursing a sprain. Aside from that, he was recovering from the flu yesterday.

Managahas’ limited minutes is also due to an injury. Even Barua is not 100%.

kudos to the archers. it was a great game. you managed to stick with UE when they were trying to pull away, something that you were not able to do in your first game against them. i too am from ateneo and i am cheering for dlsu in this series. dlsu had its share of heartaches this season. dlsu’s breakdown against UST and the three losses against Ateneo. and our side has also suffered heartbreaking losses to DLSU and NU.

it’s UE’s turn to have their hearts broken para naman pantay-pantay. and DLSU winning the title this year would simply mean that there will be more on the line when we meet again next season. i am not the kind to sourgrape. losing sucks but we have to deal with it and get better. many ateneans, myself included, never thought that we could have been one game away from reaching the finals this season. so a 3rd place finish was fine (pero masakit pa rin kasi sayang.hehe)

anyway, it’s your title to win Archers. give ’em hell. my predictions pac by ko and archers by sweep. and i’m out

hi. i’ve been visiting this site religiously right now, and this will be my first time to post. i’ve been weary to post because i’m from csb and i would hate for people to think that i’m somewhere where i don’t belong. with that said i’d like to give kudos to the green mind for the most interesting articles on this site. it’s always a good read.

needless to say i’m rooting for dlsu. i’ve been following uaap basketball since i started college in dlsu and have been hooked ever since, even if after i changed schools.

this is just my two cents on the ue-dlsu matchup. of the three games that have been played so far, only the first one was a blowout. ue was shooting the lights out that game and crushed dlsu. that was the kind of game that you dream about, the way they were shooting the ball. that game, in my mind, was a fluke. the two succeeding games (including finals game 1) were battles. the games were close that both games could’ve gone either way.

it would be great for dlsu to sweep on sunday but i think that would be easier said than done. ue is a proud team and for the first time this season they are on the brink of elimination. they are gonna come with everything on sunday which would probably give the series that “fire” that was lacking.
i’m looking for cholo and ty to step up on sunday for the archers. those two were huge in game 1 and i liked how tang was aggressive from the tipoff.

one thing’s for sure, it gonna be a war on sunday. i can’t wait. good luck to both teams.

one last thing, that greenmanure guy is really pissing me off. the manner in which he carries himself in this thread speaks volumes of whom he is as a person. i guess the best way to deal with people like that, is to ignore him altogether. i know it’s tough when people bad-mouth you for no apparent reason, but the last thing you wanna do is get into an idiotic word-war because then you would’ve sunk to his pathetic level.

and come on, blaming the referees call is such a CONVENIENT excuse.

thanks for the time. i hope i didn’t piss anyone off

5 10 2007

I’ve been a ‘fan’ if i may say of “the green mind”. You write interesting and articles that actually mean something. 🙂

The first finals game was a steal. Admittedly, it was a very close match – but heck – the archers prevailed, as well always do. I guess we’re playing smarter and better now. I do agree with mr. atayde that we are our greatest opponent. We play hard, but sometimes, it just gets the better of us – which was seen in our games. But the last 3 games proved to be that somehow, we learned from our mistakes.

And i guess that’s what makes me proud to be GREEN. Ya, we got suspended last year and hey, i’m sure a lot missed the rivalry between the blue and the green shirts. And this year, we’re BACK! we win the games that matter.

To all the dissers of DLSU, read ’em and weep nalang since whatever happens, we stay true to our colors. Win or lose, we stand by our school because we’re PROUD to be GREEN.

Ateneans and Lasallites, we’re opponents on court but outside, we have much respect for each other. Sa games, ya – we ridicule each other but still at the end of it, when we go back to the normalities of life, we’re proud with how our schools have molded us to be. 🙂

I’ve rambled on already but i’m just elated with how things turned out for the archers this year! 🙂

NEVER SHALL WE FAIL! ANIMO!

To our Atenean friends who happen to be rooting for us La Sallians, thanks! And yes, we shall meet again next season. As for the bashers here, a piece of advice..Save yourselves from the tension of being in conflict with someone and just enjoy the game for crying out loud. Indeed, what we had this year was one of the best UAAP seasons we’ve ever had. Kudos to Ateneo for being a part of it. And to UE, well may the best team win and good luck to you as well! UE loses over DLSU because of that 21-day dayoff from the game. Nawala sila sa momentum. It is understood that UE is somewhat novice again in playing on the court. We did 30 or 31 ata na turnovers which is not so UE.. Na-pissed off ako sa dating ng laro bcos of their low defense and super nervous sila. Hmm pero hindi ako nagisip na hindi nila ginalingan.. nakita ko naman kung gaano sila gumawa ng play, but unfortunately.. Natalo kami.. But it’s ok, we still have Game 2 :))

Alam mo you don’t even know the whole story so shut up.

Obviously your parents did not raise you well…your messages are full of anger and antagonism. Puro mura ang sinasabi mo…ano ba yan…I pity you…

If you do not agree with Mr. Atayde’s reaction or our opinions…just say I don’t agree because of the ff. reasons…blah, blah, blah…but do not resort to bashing. Your true personality is showing…”squaking” – (squater na ugali).

To the other La Sallians…just ignore bravehearted and greenmanure…there’s a big possibility that he’ll change his name but if the blogger’s message is full of grammatical errors and bad words…sya yon…he likes to fill his messages with antagonism.

I’m sure, my La Sallian colleagues, that you have many Atenean relatives and countless Atenean friends. What will these people who are very dear to us say when they see what we write here? Do not mind the others. Let them bash our schools. We are elite. We have class. We are basketball!

5 10 2007
a 14-0 championship

To Leigh. That’s expected, that’s the reason that whoever wins the ateneo/la salle duel would eventually be the champion. (unfortunately, it’s la salle) aside from losing momentum, UE does not have the poise or composure that the two battle tested teams have endured. Even if it was UST or FEU, UE would inevitably fold and crumble. If UE ever pulls out…I guess it deserves the championship but I doubt it would still happen.
UE’s triumph this year ends at 14-0!

5 10 2007
a 14-0 championship

This is the reason why, losing teaches you more that winning!

5 10 2007
ACET vs. DLSUet

Well, personally, the ACET really gave me a hard time and I was thankful that I passed. I used the DLSUet as a “safety net” and felt it was relatively easier. I wasn’t surprised I passed La Salle. I went to Ateneo.

Fast-forward a few years, a controversy regarding students getting into DLSU who apparently do not have the proper credentials to even pass high school. WTF! These student athletes, who are not even qualified as high school graduates, are studying and are supposedly thriving in La Salle. Now I’m not surprised. Maybe La Salle is raising its standards now that they have been exposed.

If this season they have something to prove to everyone and convince themselves of regaining lost integrity. Fine. Good for them.

I could just imagine how it is for the people who don’t pass the DLSUet considering there are people who are not actual HS grads who pass. Benilde material? (kidding!)

Although besides this, I noticed that before this controversy, most of the players from La Salle really come through as mercenaries posing as student athletes. They spend a little time and exposure in La Salle and leave as soon as the opportunity to go pro presents itself. At least, in my opinion, this is the DLSU student athlete culture that I’ve noticed.

@leigh
2nd round dlsu ue game 28 to ang ue. +3 lang ang finals game 1. they dominated the rebounds. +20 more ata in contrast to lasalle. no excuses talaga dapat. well rested so dapat 2nd half full potential na sila. usually ang rust 1st quarter, 2nd half walang wala na yun.

I dont think thats new to the other teams. beating La Salle seems to be the first priority. So it will be nothing new to the Green Archers. Its been this way since they came into the UAAP.

6 10 2007
The Green Mind

Blueflower,

Comments like yours are getting as old as dirt. While La Salle is building a team of homegrown talents, with as many as maybe 7 next year, Ateneo is going on a buying spree of players to purchase a championship.

The best thing Ateneo can do is stop looking at La Salle and start looking at themselves. Maybe that way your Blue Babble will not end up (again) as a BURST BLUE BUBBLE.

6 10 2007
Hail Mary Team

The reason Ateneo is Blue and White is because it is Mary’s colors. The much disputed Alma Matter/Graduation hymn is also “A Song for Mary”. Nothing wrong with that. It is a Hail Mary team because aside from dedicating “the fray” for Mary…It is an underdog team… which is usually described as a Hail Mary team. Claro?

To Mr Atayde.

You are displaying your selective memory and hypocrisy again!

If La Salle is only recently fielding your homegrown talents, it is only because it is trying to avoid using desperation measures such as recruiting quasi-high school graduates as mercanaries for their team. Kudos for that change in your student athlete culture.

Your players from Ateneo who have been main components of their 2002 championship such as Enrico Villianueva, Wesley Gonzales and Larry Fonacier and even Chris Quimpo have been in Ateneo since grade school.

The players responsible for your championships: Renren Ritualo, Mike Cortez, Mac Cardona, Joseph Yeo? You have a who’s who of mercenaries posing as student athlete La Sallites. (well…at least I heard Ritualo had a very good senior year thesis. Good for him)

Please, recruiting is the name of the game. It just so happens that these new recruits (which La Salle is also pursuing) happen to have an inclination of going to Ateneo. Let’s not sour grape here.

Blue Eagle THE KING.

6 10 2007

Mr. Atayde,

The only difference is that La Salle can buy their championships at bargain price. Let’s not be hypocrites here. Ateneo’s just playing La Salle’s game.

Winning the championship is just the icing on the cake. We already got the “cake” when we eliminated our rival – Ateneo.

To the Ateneans, if you are convinced the your school is better than ours…why do you have to discuss the matter over and over again…nakakatawa. Medyo pathetic na ang dating…Look at AIM, the students there know they are the cream of the crop but they do not bitch about it…di ba?

Hail Mary Team,

I dont think there is anything wrong in learning from one’s mistakes. However leaning how to commit the mistakes that others have committed is really sad. Isn’t that what Ateneo is doing with the way?

And to say that we are sourgraping is like the pot calling the kettle black. Sourgraping, why not take a look at all the posts that were made, from blaming the refs to blaming the father of TY Tang for Ateneo’s loss. Besides we are in the finals and you are not, so why should we sourgrape?

As I said before, if your team would start developing its own identity and direction without looking at La Salle, maybe just maybe, you will experience some success.

The truth behind human society holds the same truth for UAAP basketball. (Speaking of the parallelism between the referees and the Filipino politicians)

6 10 2007
The Green Mind

Blue Marc,

For you i gues, the only good ref is the one who makes the calls in favor of Ateneo. That i such a cop out. I still havent heard you blame the Ateneo team for letting the finals slip out of their fingers. They were in control on of their destiny. Was teir loss to NU also because of the refs? They had a chance to beat La Salle for outright 2nd and they lost. They beat UST, so I guess the officiating there was okay. But one of your distinguished alumni taunts the commissioner after a win…smart huh!

So when will you put a certain amount of responsiblity for the outcome on the Ateneo team?

6 10 2007
The Green Mind

Final Comments Before Tomorrow’s Game.

Tomorrow La Salle can either clinch the championship or UE takes it to a 3rd game. No matter what the outcome is at the end of the series, I will have to say that the best team will win.

If La Salle wins, than it would be the most memorable championships that the Green Archers have ever won.

If UE wins, than congratulations to the team that showed how strong it truly is. I will take consolation that at least it was not a sweep and that La Salle gave this vaunted UE team its only loss in Season 70. More than that, I would congratulate Lasallian Dindo Pumaren for bringing UE a title that has eluded them for a very long time.

La Salle will always be proud of how this year’s team performed.

6 10 2007
The Green Mind

bewildered,

I cannot in good conscience filter comments made by the readers. If I do that, then I will be accused of subjective censorship. If a person wants to write moronic, absurd and just plain stupid comments, then it is a reflection of that person’s mentality. It should not be a problem to anyone but to themselves.

Sourgraping is a heavy burden to bear. So who suffers but those who continue to bash anything that goes against what they are a part of.

6 10 2007
The Blue Marc

NU: It’s our fault, period.
UST: It was skills that made us win the game. And yes, the chefs..er..refs are cooking up the play, good thing that they weren’t able to get their ingredients prepared for them. You mentioned our alumni. Have you had a fresh account as to whatever happened before you dipped your tongue and your pen about that matter? I guess not. It’s so easy for you to judge what happened, when you haven’t even seen what happened. (I saw every game, so that’s why I can bash the refs, very different from your POV on Raffy Dayrit.) To tell you, win or lose, he’d still tell the comissioner that the referees officiating is bias.

We have beaten La Salle thrice, and we lost twice. All of those five games, were dirty games and lucky for us that we managed to score three out of five wins.

DLSU: This one’s a needless say.

This wasn’t a question of chance. It’s always a question on who paid NABRO? UST or DLSU?
No one knows.

No one will ever know why those black whistle-necklaced (not to mention, wearing a toque) ‘politicians’ called very unfavorable fouls against Team Glory Be.

6 10 2007

Sourgraping? sour graping? I believe in this institution, so why should I bear such burden?

Though I must say that you have perfectly described the very definition of sour graping. I guess it was based on your experience.

i used to think that DLSU had the right to win, as much as UE had the right to.
but if you’re going to put this basketball game into other context..
shet naman walang personalan..

‘we have already proven that La Salle is better than Ateneo in academics.

not to mention that UE has produced more graduates who are much better in their respective fields than ateneo has.’

how did u prove that la salle is better than Ateneo..in d first place ang daling pumasa sa inyo..ano ba yan?! walang challenge entrance exam pa lng.~_~

i was a star scholar.pero i chose to be an Atenean.mas maganda education.

about that stuff sa UE..san mo naman nakuha yan?? naisip mo lng tapos sinulat mo? dude think naman.UE and ATENEO have different arrays of courses.specific ang courses sa UE. tingin ka muna ng mga nagtatrabaho sa multi-national companies.makikita mo ang Ateneo.marami sila dun.kasi pagka-graduate pa lng, nasa global scale na ang position.

think first before you say stuff. mas mabuti if you research muna about the things na sinasabi mo. para hindi ka kinokontra.

6 10 2007
The Green Mind

Blue Marc,

So the Ateneo team lost because of everybody elses fault except their own.

Laten at what you’re saying. You are accusing both La Salle and UST for paying off the referees. If that ist sourgraping, then what do you call it? It setainly is not acceptance.

Wow man…I never thought that you guys were so affected. Blame the whole world that Ateneo lost because Ateneo did not have a chance at their own destiny. Maybe if they did not plan that celebration at Tagaytay Highlands after the NU game. Thy would be playing tomorrow.

This is an article written by an ex-ACNielsen about the diff. universities

Psycho Speaks
Vol 10

Psycho Speaks…on School Pride
Any of you catch the previous La Salle – Ateneo game? The one where La
Salle blew a 15-point half time lead? The one that robbed many a Green’s
wallet and savings accounts of their contents? The one that most of you
rubbed in my face the moment you saw me? Yeah, that one.

Well, it got me thinking of several things. Chief among which was how I can
get away with bleeding Cardona’s throat for choking YET AGAIN! But it also
got me remembering about my college days. It seemed like eons ago and yet
some feelings seem so fresh today even after 6 years.

I was a diehard Archer fan back then. Win or lose I’d be at the games,
cheering and shouting for all I was worth. School Pride. You loved your
campus and hated the others.

We all outgrow it eventually. Or do we? Let’s test it shall we? Listed
below are several schools and what I think of them. Try to see what you
feel after reading what this jack-off had to say about your university.
Enjoy.

ATENEO
This school’s trademark is arrogance. Nothing more, nothing less. I have,
to this day, not met an Atenean who does not think that their school is THE
best there is. Even La Sallites and um, uh, UP people (what do you call
yourselves anyway?) are not this shamelessly boastful. This does not mean
to say however, that they are all pricks and witches. Some of the best buds
I have are Ateneans. All two of them. But come on! Seriously, the only
thing Ateneo can claim to be the best in is creating a 2-hour gridlock over
a road stretching 3 damned kilometers!! !

Oh, and Interdisciplinary Studies is NOT a course. It’s Jesuit charity for
the incurably dumb and lazy.

ADAMSON
Hmmm, let’s see what I can say about Adamson. Well, there’s the fact their
school color is blue like Ateneo. Their team mascot is a bird like Ateneo.
Aside from that, there’s not a shred else. Damn this school is boring.

FEU and UE
Do any of you know what FEU stands for? Forever Useless! Yes, I’m an ass.
But joking aside, the Far Eastern University and the University of the East
are two schools whose names imply that at least one of them was founded by
a group of people who had the creative, artistic, and imaginative prowess
of a pile of rocks.

Seriously though, these are feel good schools. If you don’t believe me try
visiting either campus. The moment you see them, you start feeling good
that you don’t go there.

UP
Here’s a school that, for better or worse, is totally bereft of any
identity. Some people regard it as THE premier educational institution in
the country. There are those who, for good reason, look at it simply as one
big vicious playground. And others see it as a breeding ground for militant
wannabe rebels who try to lobby for whatever cause they deem to be in the
country’s best interest. For those of you who can truly relate
with the latter you have to be in your late 40’s or 50’s. Shit you’re
OLD!!! La lang.

I favor the first two views. It really IS the best educational institution
there is. And I’m not just saying that because I’m surrounded all day by UP
graduates who’d just as soon throw me off the 11th floor balcony given the
slightest provocation as look at me. I really, really do believe…that
they will kill me if I say anything bad against UP.
Can you blame me? The only thing longer than the list of UP’s distinguished
alumni (Miriam Defensor included) is the list of all the in-campus
violence. There’s a psycho lurking deep inside each UP educated
man/woman/child . This will be confirmed by the amount of hate mail I’ll be
receiving from them.

UST
Here’s a school that will totally drag down one’s social status just by
being enrolled in it. I don’t care how rich you are or how cultured you may
be, if you’re from UST it don’t mean shit. That’s not necessarily a bad
thing. I know of several obnoxious AB kids who were brought down several
pegs while studying there and are now some of the nicest, most unassuming
people to walk this planet.

It’s funny to note how much this place of learning mirrors the current
social state of the country every time the UAAP season kicks in. Come the
basketball tournament, they’re all friends. You see them chanting,
clapping, and giving each other high-fives. United by a common goal, the
rich and the poor are united as one. After the event is passed, they all go
back to hating each other.

DLSU
Di Lumusot Sa UPCAT. That’s a classic ain’t it? It’s as hilario us now as
it was when I first heard it in 1994, which is to say, it’s about as funny
as getting kicked in the crotch. It’s sad to note for a proud alumnus such
as myself that a school with as impressive an academic pedigree as La Salle
has become nothing more than a money-hungry institution whose only
requirements for acceptance nowadays seem to be a pulse, an IQ over 80, and
the financial capacity/ability to pay. Nowadays, whenever I incounter a
person clayming to be from La Sall and they speech bad, have poor grammage,
and cannot spill correctness, I am not surprice.

NU
I’m not even sure if this place is a real school. And I don’t mean that in
a snooty-you’re- nothing-compared -to-my-school way. I mean I’m not even sure
this place actually exists. I actually started believing that its initials
really stood for Negative sa UPCAT.

Think about it. Do any of you really know anyone from NU? Do any of you
even know of anyone who knows anybody from NU?

And if any of you even point to their basketball team and the audience that
watches its games as proof of its existence, I beg you to think of this
point. They act like absolute maniacs and they even look the part. If we go
by that, then the National University is not a school. It’s a correctional
facility.

CSB
This school has had a bad rep since the day of its inception. Admittedly,
it started out as a place where DLSU can deposit its non-performing
students so as not to give up the sizeable revenues from those hopeless
bastards who have the money to shell out but not the ability to count it.
Everybody knows this already.

What people don’t know is that CSB now boasts of fine world class courses
designed to equip the Benildean with the tools necessary to succeed in the
real world. These courses include Basic Arithmetic majoring in the
Multiplication Table, Whining with a specialization on Tantrums, and the
ever popular Strategic Investments: What to do with your Parents’Money.

CRC/UAP
Them Opus Dei folks can slap it with whatever initials they deem fit, it
would still not change the fact that this school will forever be known not
by its academic achievements but more by the fact that it is the only
school with a car to student ratio nearing 1:1. (No my dear CSB students
and alums, that is not read as one colon one.)

The meanest thing one can say about CRC is that it’s a school filled with
students rich enough to be Ateneans, but will never be smart enough to be
such. The nicest thing one can say about CRC is that it’s near a Starbucks
open until 2 am.

Now I realize I might have offended some people out there. Let me tell you
right now that I am whole-heartedly and humbly sorry. I am sorry that you
have no sense of humor and nobody had the heart to whack your uptight head
when you were growing up. For those of you did appreciate this, I give
seminars on insensitivity and creatively callous writing. Feel free to
email me.

Peace and chill folks.

Psycho Speaks
Vol 10 – 2

Psycho Speaks on Notoriety

Usually, my articles are greeted by the same kind of silence that you can
only find in outer space or really, really deep underwater. There are a
few kind words thrown my way, which are greatly appreciated, but that is
pretty much the extent of it. I’m more than certain that the previous
issues of Psycho Speaks never really went beyond the original circle to
which it was sent. That’s cool. The actual purpose of this entire thing
was to entertain my friends anyway and if anybody else got a kick out of
it, it was just an added bonus.

But my piece on School Pride has met with a degree of popularity that I
found overwhelming. Volume 10 found its way through discussion forums,
email groups, and even bar conversations. It has been circulated so widely
that it was even forwarded back to me from the U.S. ! According to some
people it was even responsible for sparking good-natured office feuds. God,
it was the best natural high knowing that so many liked it.

Of course, you can’t really please everybody. And this, without a doubt,
was the most enjoyable aspect of my newfound infamy. I would like to take
this opportunity to thank all the people who wasted their time reacting to
my ish. Without any of you, I would have no one to ridicule.

So my dear audience, before my 15 minutes of fame is up, let me now present
to you what people had to say about me, and more importantly, what I had to
say about them.

Enjoy.

REACTIONS

One Atenean said that it would serve me well to remember that the great
cinematic director Carlito Siguon-Reyna (or some such) was an IS graduate
before I started mouthing off about their course like that. Another said
something really profound and mature that went, “unlike you, we’re good
looking.”

See, I never said anything about IS graduates being ugly or that they were
not artistic. I just said they were dumb. Look, instead of defending
yourselves, don’t you think it would be best if you people just lift your
hands to heaven and give thanks? You are, after all, living proof that
nature really does compensate for natural disabilities such as stupidity.

-o-o-o-

People told me that I took it so easy on UP, that I either really respected
or really was terrified of the school. A vast majority of these comments
actually came from UP alums. I seem to have inadvertently given them a
sense of superiority. This was not my intention. I actually thought that
attaching the name of Miriam Defensor to UP was a slur worthy of the Ateneo
– Erap slap in the face. Apparently, it was not insulting enough. UP
people are either too thick skinned or have very little pride in their
university. They also informed me that they are known by the nickname
Isko, meaning Iskolar ng Bayan. They’re all proud of it too, which makes
me wonder if UP can be entered into the Guiness Book of World Records as
the largest collection of dorks…ever.

And iskolar? I asked them what was up with that? Scholars are supposed to
be smart. A large proportion of them aren’t. They say it’s because the
government subsidizes the University with OUR tax money. That being the
case, I ask everyone to join me in giving UP people a nickname they truly
deserve – LEECHES.

-o-o-o-

Since the article came out, I have been flooded by numerous text messages
regarding sightings of what some claim to be are NU students. I think I
have actually succeeded in creating an urban legend. Still, some believe
in NU with a conviction that I cannot fathom. I am not saying you’re all
liars, but until you can show me some photographic evidence, or better yet,
if you can capture for me a live sample, the existence of NU will forever
be as much of a myth to me as the smart Benildean or the humble Atenean.

HATE MAIL

Speaking of CSB, one student wrote to me saying that she, and I quote,”will
not stoop down to your (my) level of mockery and react to such frivolous
nonsense.” Dumbass! Didn’t you just? But hey, props to you for using big
words. I hope you didn’t pop a blood vessel. I know how taxing thinking
is for you people. I can’t help but wonder how many times you had to spell
check that and did it take your whole block to come up with that sentence?

And from my own backyard, come these two winners.

“have no right calling yourself an Archer like us.” Damn straight I’m not
going to call myself an archer. Unlike you, I’m not a wannabe.
Congratulations to you though because your comment has sprung up in most
email groups that have passed my article around. You have,
single-handedly, confirmed to the rest of the academic community that our
school caters to trying hard nerds such as yourself.

“La Sallians are not BOBO!!!” To whoever you are, I say that your command
of the English language is unparalleled and does a lot to support your
claim. You likewise mentioned that the tri-semester system is tough. It’s
not. Well maybe it is, you know, for the La Sallians who are bobo.

BASHER
Lastly, in the spirit of equal opportunity bashing here are some quick
quips for all those schools that I left out of the original shit list:

Lyceum – I know what it’s supposed to mean but there’s still something so
wrong when a school’s name sounds like a sexually transmitted disease.

FEATI – “Look up, young man, look up – so we can pick your pockets.” This
is the only school I know that offers Criminalogy. Yes, you read right,
Criminalogy. It’s the course men take to become criminals.

La Salle Dasmarias – Your violent reactions against my views on La Salle ‘s
admission policies is perplexing. For some reason, you seem to be under
the delusion that you people are part of La Salle .

St. Benedict’s College – All I can say is, “Wow, and I thought CSB kids
were idiots.”

Assumption Antipolo – I applaud you girls for your conviction that you are
smarter, prettier, and sexier than the gals of the San Lorenzo campus. Now,
all you have to do is convince the REST OF THE WORLD.

Assumption San Lorenzo – You’ve got to love a school whose slogan is,
“where virginity is a thing of the past!”

Mapua -Can anybody say fungal infection?

St. Scholastica’ s College – And yet another slogan jackpot, “we start
lesbians young!”

So there it is, my final foray into the world of academic trashing. Again,
if I have offended anybody, please accept my heart felt, GO TO HELL! Don’t
worry, it won’t be that bad down there. You can hang with all the Miriam
chicks.

Seriously, it was cool being popular, even if it was just for a while.
Thank you all. Now it’s time for me to slide back into the arms ambiguity.

Peace and chill folks,

-psycho!!!

I was not expecting that DLSU would reach this far…they eliminated Ateneo and eventually captured the 1st game of the best of three…probably that is the main reason why I am so proud of the DLSU team…because in spite of the injuries…they were able to get to where they are now, the finals. Blue horizon and blue marc, clearly both of you are sourgraping. Ateneo lost – live with it!

Why do you have to bash La Salle? So you can prove that you are better than us? Funny ha, my friends from AIM are not as arrogant as the Ateneans but they are intellectually more gifted.

ARROGANCE – that’s the reason why you are having a hard time accepting your defeat. You cannot accept that there are better teams than the Ateneo team.

4. The refs were against the other team.

Food for Thought:

Ex-President Estrada (during his term) hired Brother Andrew as secretary of the Department of Education. When he was asked by reporters to explain his decision, Erap said that he is more impressed by the La Sallian education. Take note that all his male grand kids are studying at Xavier and Erap is also an Ateneo alumnus (high school).

REPLY TO MR. ATAYDE,

Sour graping in terms of recruiting. Sorry if I wasn’t making myself clear. It’s just that you were making the point of “a home grown La Salle team while Ateneo going the opposite route” idea. Its just that both schools can attribute past and current success to the talent that their recruits provide. The leaders of your team this year (Villanueva, Maierhofer ,Tang and Casio) are all recruits. Even your past championships were led and won by recuits (Allado, Ritualo, Cortez, Cardona, Wilson). If the talent is out there and they are willing to play for the blue and white, I don’t see anything wrong (I just hope they are qualified HS graduates). Ateneo has not yet made La Salle’s mistake.

I have no problem with La Salle winning or Ateneo losing. I am actually CONCEDING that fact. This year, La Salle is a better team and won on the day that counts. I, also, don’t have a problem with your pro-La Salle propaganda. I am an Atenean but I also have an open mind. I still want to know what the other side has to say. It’s just that I have an opinion too.

As far as bashing is concerned, I guess both side’s passion for their alma matter gets the better of them. I can’t account for every low blow that gets posted in your column. As for myself, I don’t want to give an excuse for Ateneo losing. I don’t blame the referees or even Tang’s father for our defeat. La Salle was just a better basketball team than Ateneo that day. Period.

Congrats. You are in the finals. Looking at your team on paper, you have a very talented team that is worthy of challenging for the crown. No sour graping here. Looking at Ateneo’s team on paper I was actually surprised the team performed the way it did this season. It is definitely not as talented as La Salle but it put up a good fight until the end. That is what makes them THE Hail Mary Team.

No regrets on the NU loss (Even the subsequent La Salle defeat). Yes, it would have given us a relatively easier road to the finals. Maybe we would have been in the finals right now (or still, maybe not).

I was actually more afraid that we were about to face a very dangerous UST team. Looking at how things turned out, it’s not a complete and devastating defeat. 2 out of 3 knockout games ain’t all that bad. Yes, the season is over for us but it was a good way to go out. Going out with our backs against the wall.

Even Rocky did not get his title the first try. (haha)

Referees by Hail Mary Team

It’s such a sorry/lame excuse every time a school loses for the losing side to blame the referees. I almost feel sorry for the referees (although in the NBA, there was such a controversy!). I guess it is already within our culture. The saying “meron lang nanalo at nadaya” in every competition always applies in this country.

Just an observation.

In the UAAP basketball scenario, two sides are so biased they only see what they want to see. I read the La Salle posts when La Salle lost earlier this season and they also accused Ateneo of rigging the game through the referees. This time, it just so happened that it was Ateneo that got the short end of the stick. I don’t know. Certainly, everyone is self-serving when it involves their interest.

Impossible proposal: have a replay rule on every call. At least it would completely remove the human element.

Blue Eagle THE KING.

it is also a testament to how good our basketball program is despite serving a 1 year suspension.

the players suffered numerous injuries and lost key players in injuries and suspension, but again and again, we at lasalle still prevail.

it was really a god game. no doubt about it. the refs made them play and had stopped calling useless fouls. its all ue to blame for the loss. numerous turnovers here and there, travelling or airballs. talagang they dug their own holes.

fellow lasalle peeps, hayaan nalang natin ang bashing antics ng u.e. or other schools. you can’t blame them. it is a lethargic deed, i know they dont mean it. let their wounds heal, hayaan nyo nalang gawin nilang outlet to. nasaktan sila sa game.

Sour-graping is very much different from rationalization.

Accepting defeat is a lot, LOT different than capitulating a dirty battle. You remind me of Barrera (though in his case, he didn’t pay the referee)

to Dlrt, congrats din sa pagka panalo.

Blue marc,

I am so happy to see you miserable. This La Salle victory is dedicated to people like you who woke up this morning with the realization that La Salle won. You must be getting an ulcer from all the sour grapes you ate, all the way down to the depth of your stomach.

I hope you do not stop posting your remarks cos everytime you do, it will remind you that La Salle is the champion.

I thank the high heavens for people like you. It makes victory a lot sweeter.

La Salle beating UE was the worst thing I’ve seen on TV. It’s such a pity knowing UE’s gonna loose even before they played the second time. The refs did give enough chances on La Salle that it’s too obvious they were paid big bucks. They did it the first time and they didn’t have enough soul to do it again, and whoa Green Goblins are too proud of their act. Bless you for your money!!!.. woohoo..

9 10 2007
PinKisH_23

@ Green Archer

LOSER! Is that all you can say? I think YOU had a sad childhood here. Anyway, what’s done is done, there’s no turning back, unless you give back the trophy (again??!!!), which UE wouldn’t accept. If you force others to believe that you won without paying, then believe me, nobody trust La Salle anymore. You’ll never ever gain back the respect you used to have. Bless you for your money La Salle.

kahit ano pa ang sabihin ninyo eto lang ang totoo: CHAMPIONS KAMI NGAYON! BWAHAHA!

Nobody cares about your championship, since we all know there’s money circulating the finals. You paid the refs too well that each year you’re at the finals. It’s been a known fact and you can do nothing to take it out of green shirt. Losers!!! Cheaters!!!

9 10 2007
The Green Mind

PinKisH_23,

Who died and made you God? If nobodu cares then why are you so affected? Known fact? Well it seems that it is only know to you. The only fact that is obvious is how miserable you are that La Salle won. Well it looks like you will be miserable for a whole year.

Just remember that losers like you always find excuses why you lose while winners find the right reasons to win.

May your misery continue!

Pinkish_23

The only one with brains is you. I love to hear all you miserable comments. Bottomline is you do not belong on the winners side.

“Thats all you got?” I dont think so. We have a championship in both the junior and the seniors which is quite a lot. What do you have? NADA, ZERO, WALA. Well you have your miserable life to wake up to. And everytime you open your eyes, you will be more miserable than the day before.

Thank you very much. Everytime I read your comments, it just adds more icing to the cake.

Whatever cake it is, I hope you choke to death.

10 10 2007

First, people will never be interested in how you got the championship, it was way too obvious that the refs are part your payroll. Second, I’m not interested in your article Tony, it just catched my attention because never in my entire life did I meet someone who feed from covering his alma mater’s shit.
Third, you’re a no brainer hiding behind a “writer’s shadow” so I don’t mind bashing you every inch of the way.
And one more thing, double check your cake, your icing might be deadly.

PinKisH_23.

Thank you once more for making my day start great. Nothing you can say can take away the fact that Im happy and you’re not.

You want to add to my misery? You must be living a Nickelodeon life cos it is apparent that you are the one wallowing in misery.

Lastly, people are interested in La Salle’s championship. Even you are interested since it seems to have a very strong adverse effect on you and you keep coming back here. If you weren’t interested then you should be on some Anger Management website.

10 10 2007
PinKisH_23

@ The Green Mind

Not really interested with La Salle’s over glorified win (though we all know what happened to that game, cash…ing cash…ing). Just so intrigued with the way you write your wayward ideas. BTW, keep rubbing it you might get satisfied.

10 10 2007
The Green Mind

PinKisH_23,

There you go again…”we all know”?? When you say “we all know” that means no exceptions. But with all the positive posts in this article, it appears that your generalization is absolutely idiotic.

You dont have to be intrigued by my writing cos at least there are those who have given positive feedback. In your case, your comments are those of a parnaoid, schizo individual. You keep pounding on the refs just because they cant reply to your wayward accusations. You blame La Salle and everyone you can think off. Always blaming blaming blaming.

Kawawa ka naman. Tomorrow you will still wake up miserable cos nothing you can say, no story you can concoct will take that championship away. LIVE WITH IT!

Hail Mary Squad

Actually, in DLSU’s defense (I can’t believe I’m doing this) A win is still a win regardless of theories of it being biased. If the referees constantly made calls in favor of La Salle throughout the game, that would be fixed. I still choose to believe it was called right in the middle (even in the ADMU games).Fact of the matter is, because of our passion for our schools, all of us want virtually all the calls to go our way just to win. There’s no fun in that. Winners make losers and losers make excuses.

Overall, minus the Ilad blunder, this was a good season for La Salle. As an Atenean no less, their suspension last year made me realize that (forgive me for my term) they are a necessary evil (vice-versa for La Salle). The Red Sox have the Yankees just as Ateneo has La Salle. There’s no other rivalry in the country like it. They more than made up for their absence last year with 5 epic games against Ateneo. These were classics! ADMU/DLSU games are the best show in the Philippines. After Ateneo lost, I was sad because it will be until a year until I watch these games again. Sorry substitute NBA season muna!

Regarding the UE collapse, they have nobody but themselves to blame for it. People even proclaimed this team as capable to beat even Pro-league teams. I certainly felt that after that 14-0, they could still beat La Salle even with the referees allegedly all paid up…but they didn’t. Losing sucks, especially the way they did. But hey, there’s always next year and the year after that unless they get suspended!

10 10 2007
Hail Mary Squad

Regarding Tony,

I have to admit his column, even if it is notoriously and even ridiculously biased towards La Salle, is still very entertaining with the reaction it sparks. Controversial to say the least. This is the only forum where I post because the people are really riled up because of his comments and he is unapologetic because of it. It’s fun to join the fray.

After reading the “Dignity…” and “La Salle beat La Salle” articles, I thought this guy sees only what he wants to see. I guess the “sus…” banner really hit him hard that he felt he had to defend his alma matter. A few articles later, you understand the guy’s just passionate for DLSU. Hey, aren’t we all regarding our respective universities. The only thing I completely disagree with is his statement regarding recruitment. But hey, everyone has an opinion. I definitely may not agree with his but at least I respect it.

There’s really nothing like UAAP basketball. It gives people the chance to act extremely childish with all the bashing that goes on. It is the only place where I could see old alumni during live games taunting, jeering and acting juvenile.

Hail Mary Squad,

You are good sport.

You are absolutely right about the rivalry. I am very big Boston Celtic fan but I lived in Los Angeles for many years. I was a witness to those great Celtic-Laker games with Bird going up against Magic.

That is the closest, but not even equal, I can compare to a La Salle Ateneo game.

10 10 2007
Hail Mary Squad

I just hope that eventually, there would be an Atenean counterpart next year. A Blue Blood to counter the Green Mind!

Congrats on your sweep La Salle. Game 2 wasn’t even that close. Your players showed up with their A game and eventually won the game. You deserve it.

I like the comment that stated “La Salle steel was formed and hardened in Ateneo fire” after those duels. Poetic. You fought the good fight against seemingly invincible UE.

sourgraping is when youre saying a thing on which u really mean the opposite of it. well, i never sourgraped mr. atayde.. i just tell the truth. because i know that you know it too, the filthy habit that your team do just to win. and when someone is accusing your team of paying the refs, you just always say that theyre sourgraping. but still, you never gave an answer. then why dont you answer this comment once and for all and tell it right after this comment that your team never payed any refs ever at any game. but even if you said no, id still doubt coz your team dont even care allowing ineligible players to play . remember, the truth will always set you free.. no more sourgraping this time, no more change-the-topic things, no more lie..

god is watching us all, remember. trophy here is just a thing.. a trophy up there in heaven is just everything, including your salvation old man. =)

mr atayde, im not trying to be holy.. but honestly, im already pathetic. ive been pathetic already because of the filthy things that the green community is always doing. and its already driving me crazy. oh, like a lyrics of a song, huh?.. ;p well, im not saying that you guys cheat all the time.. just most of the time.. 🙂

remember, you have a banner in the coliseum that i adore.. “winning when it matters most.” and if i would be an atenean, it will really insult me to read that..

but calm down mr atayde and all those green faithfuls, i have an answer to it…

“cheating when it matters most.” =)

you dont chea* all the time, but most of the time, especially when it matters most. =)

remember, god is watching us all.

no need to have proofs that you guys cheated. res ipsa loquitor.. the thing speaks for itself.. its already clear just even to watch the refs calling their unlawful calls against the reds. ;p

godspeed mr atayde.

by the way, the refs should have a fair share of the trophy guys, they also really worked hard for it.

its a fact, the green won the championship. and i had to live with it. and it really makes my life worth regretting all the time. =( sad truth.

Excuses.

“Win or LOSE, its the EXCUSE you choose”

Ateneans = Crab Mentality.

You’ll do EVERYTHING and ANYTHING just to bring down anyone/everyone most especially La Salle. You just can’t accept the reality that La Salle is now better than ‘duh’ ateneo, be it in academics and in sports.

Tsk. So much for being a “man for others”. Tsk.

Tsk.

Also, do not use the name of God in vain.

Sheesh, you’ll even use God’s name just to bring down another institution together with your chismis.

Pity you, atenean.
